Topic: WLS after cancer diagnosis?
Do you know if WLS is typically denied after diagnosis of cancer? I have eye cancer.
I had lap band surgery in 2009. Am looking into RNY now, was diagnosed in between then and now. Initially I lost 100 lbs, but in the past year have regained half of it.

Topic: uterine biopsy - have a huge question...
i a morbidly obese and carry a lot of it in my tummy area but i have never had a problem with gyn exams (sorry guys - i promise im going to get that personal lol) - i went to this well respected gyn for only the 2nd time (first time he seemed to have no problem) and he said it was hard to do a good thorough exam so he wants to take a look c and do a biopsy """JUST TO MAKE SURE HE ISN'T MISSING ANYTHING"""  - He would not elaborate any at all about the test other than it might hurt adn when i asked again why they were doing it he said the same thing

Is he a great doc just covering his bases cause i am overweight or i am wondering if he saw something he didn't like - i am nervous now.

thanks for any words and responses

also - he also came out of another room actually complaining about another patient being long winded :(

Topic: RE: Colon Cancer
Thank you Daring2dream,  Am encouraged to hear about your success.  I have told my
family to make sure they have had at least one even if not 50 yet.  Some have done it
but some don't think it necessary.  My dr said I should encourage them to do it since
we have so much cancer in our family. Mother and 2 her sisters and cousin, my sister,
brother and now  younger brother fighting prostate cancer and another cousin fighting
prostate cancer all on same side of family.  All diff kinds. So many lost.  Sounds like I'm
dwelling on the sad side of cancer but am not.  I truely do have a positive disposition and
am told that is best medicine.  I will do whatever oncologist advises and will beat this,
I'm sure. I've been having colonoscopy's for the last 30 years(every 5 years) I was
diagnosed at my routine colonoscopy in Feb. so I know they work.  Wish everyone
would do that instead of waiting til 50.  Routine made mine be found early and prognosis
is good.   Chemo is because one cell found outside colon behind the tumor.  No other
indication that it has spread further. 28 lymph nodes tested neg for cancer so I
feel good about proactive decision for chemo.  I've never been a procrastinator so
was happy when my oncologist said he didn't want to sit and wait to see. Hope
our stories help others *****ad this.  Colonoscopy's prevent colon cancer. Don't
wait to have first one.  Then gastroenerologist will decide how often to have them
results after of first one.

I am so glad to hear that you are feeling well, it is a long, often difficult journey, but one that you can definately do!   I was on track a year ago to get sleeved...just ready to send all the paper work to insurance when I was diagnosed with stage 3b colon cancer.  I did 12 treatments and just had my 3 month CT scan and at this point am NED. I was very lucky to have had the colonoscopy since I was 46 at the time, if I had waited til 50...well I wouldnt have made it to 50.

I will be saying prayers for you on this journey, all the best.

The Dr said I am retaining ALOT of water weight. I know I am not eating right but not that much. Thank you for replying. This is all a condition that i don;t need or want to deal with.

Topic: RE: For those of you dianosed with cancer
I had a freak complication, that I suspect actually did lead to my cancer.  In general, though, no, I don't think WLS causes cancer.  Correlational studies suggest that it leads to lower cancer rates than matched controls (people) where the match is the same starting body weight as your pre-surgery, yet they didn't have a WLS & are still obese (they have higher rates of cancer).

I apparently am prone to adhesions/ scar tissue.  My appendix formed a solid adhesion around the circumference of my small bowel.  The appendix was also stuck to my colon.  The adhesions slowly reduced the blood flow to the appendix, which caused to eventually die = appendicitis about 17 months after WLS.  The surgeon who did the emergency appendectomy also happens to be a DS surgeon who said that most surgeons would go their entire career & never see a case like this - among someone who had the DS or RNY, it's extremely rare.

I started having severe night sweats & fatigue (which was anemia of chronic disease, NOT iron deficiency anemia) 2 months after the appendicitis/bowel obstruction.  I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which is an immune system cancer of the white blood cells (WBC).  WBCs go into overdrive when we have infections.  Well, when I had the appendicitis, my WBCs went into massive overdrive, I actually had started going into septic shock, they were 24,500.

It is pretty unusual for Hodgkin's Lymphoma to go below ("south of") the diaphragm, yet according to the size & how the tumors branched out, I know mine actually STARTED below my diaphragm - directly behind my small intestine where I had the massive infection from the appendicits & bowel obstruction 2 months before my cancer symptoms started.

Coincidence??

There's a theory in cancer that most people actually have some cancer cells in their body at some point, yet our cells our programmed to destruct & get eaten (by macrophages) if they are damaged . . . which is exactly what cancer cells are - damaged cells that are able to turn off this natural self-destruction safeguard.  The theory goes that, when the immune system is overwhelmed by some trauma or chronic disease, it's normal job of cleaning up/ destroying the mutant cells isn't as effective.  It's already busy dealing with something else & it can't destroy the mutant cell, which then is allowed to divide, and divide, and divide, and form a tumor, etc.

Yes, I personally think MY cancer was ultimately caused by my WLS, but I also think that it is an exception to the majority of observances that site lower cancer rates than if you had stayed obese.

My weight had been stable for 1 year when I started 6 months of chemo.  It actually had dipped down about 7 - 8 pounds in the 2 months prior to starting treatment, but that was actually from the cancer.

I gained back those 7 - 8 pounds in the first couple months of chemo & then my weight remained stable throughout the rest of chemo.  I gained 15 pounds in the 2 months after - so 15 pounds higher than my stable weight.  I suspect it was b/c I was so inactive for so long that I lost a lot of muscle & my metabolism had decreased, which was fine during chemo b/c my appetite wasn't all that great from nausea.  Once that was done, my appetite was back to normal, but my metabolism was still crappy from the months of inactivity.  Now that I've gotten active again, I'm slowly losing the extra weight.  I am also watching what I eat - not as well as I could, but I'm okay with the progress.

My "take home message' is maybe your metabolism also decreased due to inactivity & lost muscle, yet your appetite is back  to normal.
