Topic: RE: Suggestions for a place to talk about being a caregiver?
I would suggest calling The Patient Advocacy Foundation. I'm a cancer survivor & have had jobs where I'm the "advocate" for others. What I like about this place is they will ask your questions about what your situation is & match up any resources from other organizations that may be helpful to you. It's rather like a "one-stop-shop". You can find multiple contacts for resources with just them.
Caregivers absolutely need support and it's not just about food, of course. Though, as a WLS person, I understand that one too.
You might not find a forum for WLS people who are also caregivers, but you can get more resources to help so that you have a little more peace of mind that things are getting taken care of when you need to take some time for yourself - which you do! There's nothing wrong with that!
I would also suggest that you find a caregiver support group in your local area. I'm sure there are others who struggle with turning to food, or ciggies, or alcohol during these times also.

Topic: RE: Thyroid Cancer
I had my RNY done three years ago and I had half of my thyroid removed a week ago. The pathology reports came back yesterday and it is Stage 2 thyroid cancer. The surgeon wants to wait three more weeks to remove the other half of my thyroid and then I go back to the Endochrinologist to schedule the RAI treatment. Being that I'm still a bit stunned by the diagnosis, I honestly only heard about half of what she said after "it's cancer" so I've been on the internet this morning looking to understand where I go from here.
I can say with complete certainty that my RNY had nothing whatsoever to do with the developement of this cancer. I've had suspicious nodules in my thyroid for 15 years ~ I just finally decided to have the surgery and see what they were. Now I'm glad I did. If it were not for the 100 lb weight loss from my RNY, I would have had more complications such as high blood pressure, borderline diabetis and sleeping disorders to deal with on top of this.
To answer your question ~ the thyroid surgery was a breeze. i was in by10:30 and home by 3:30. No problems at all, in fact I don't really remember much of that whole day.

My thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Try adding some extra protein in place of the carbs. Carbs are a really hard thing for me to not eat. I have been trying to eat a small salad with some sweet pepper and a few baby carrot for the crunch. If this what you are craving something cruch or salty or is bread, pasta and pototo?

I am one year out from RNY and am caring for my husband that has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. I have him home with the help of hospice. I'm doing my best to take care of him, a 14 year old and a 5 year old. My husband is only 42. My problem is the carb beast is back, it's my drug of choice and I'm doing us all a disservice by not taking care of me. But I feel out of control. Looking for a forum for people with sort of issue. Thanks Lori

I can;t tell you how much I appreciated the time you took to answer me. It's really hard when you need info about both and very few seem to have the info.
I am going to print this off and discuss the med's you mentioned when I get to the point of chemo. For me in about 5 wks. comes the first stage of surgery to remove the tumor and them looking at it and hoping not affected the lump glands. They told me then followed by 4-6 wks. of chemo and then 6-8 wks. of radiation. Hope they are right about how many wks. I guess time between all the three things. Abit overwhelming when you think your life was going so well and lots of positives about how you look and erercising every morning for a 1/2 hr. so proud of myself. And then everything changes in an instance.
Yes, I am sure there is a Gilda's club here, as you might not know she was Canadian and from Toronto like me.

I had my surgery Feb. 15 down 82 lbs and now found out this week atypical breast cancer. As only you can appreciate a very hard thing to accept after being so successful with weight loss. The one thing I didn;t do was turn to food which I would have in the past.
People seem to know alot of breast cancer or gastro bi-pass but few seem to know both. It seems that you are one who does. Did you have chemo and if so how did it go?. I wonder about mal absorption and all the other things that come with chemo.
How did you gain the weight if I may ask?
Anything you can share with me would be very helpful.
Sorry I can;t help you but if you would you could be very helpful to me.

I had cancer and treatment with chemo and rads first. then 2 years later had the sleeve. I just could not loose the cancer weight. I have heard of others that have gone from the band to having the sleeve done. Thats a possibility for you. No maintance like teh band. Its done forever. You figure we have already fought the cancer battle and sirvived. We have an entire new outlook on life. Why not go for it and enjoy. I still take Arimidex and have no problem with the weight gain from it anymore. I would definitely call your oncologist and ask if it would be o.k., My Onc said many many many patients he sees are both before and after.
