Topic: RE: Cancer after gastric bypass
Hi
I have a question did you have chemo and radiation and how did you do.  So few people to ask that have had our surgery and then have to deal with treatment for cancer.
Anything you can tell me would be so helpful.
Mine is breast cancer and I know each cancer the treatment, chemo is different.
Thanks
All the best to you.
Sorry but I can;t answer the protein intake question but where you had the gastric bypass should be able to tell you what to do.

Thank you so much for responding.  It is really scary when doctors know one thing and not the other.  I was so worried about chemo and my little stomach. I go to have a lumpectomy this Thurs and then have to wait 2 wks. for the results to see if its gone in lump nods.  You didn;t have radiation? I thought everyone does with breast cancer.
So happy to hear you are doing so well two yrs. out.
What a journey you have been on and so nice to speak to someone who has gone through it.
I am 3X negative, only 20% of women get this type of cancer, more aggressive as I read but I am stage 1, small so hopefully hasn;t gone anywhere else. I have always heard that Mayo is the best.
I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

I would pose that question to your kidney doctor- not just your bariatric surgeon.

Topic: RE: Thyroid Cancer survivor - which WLS would be best??
I don't know how to answer your question other than to let you know I am thinking about you and wish you the best. I had RNY. I like the malabsoption feature of it. It is a double edge sword however. I wish I could still take ibuprofen.

Ruth,
I was 1 1/2 years out from RNY when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I am now almost 2 years without incident. Pheeeeew!
I had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and I also had to undergo chemo and then herceptin treatments for one year.
It IS doable. I did very well on it. I was treated at the Mayo here in Phoenix and that was one of my concerns was not being able to be properly treated because I had "ruined" myself by having RNY. My Oncologist said, "Nora, you did NOT ruin yourself, if anything you saved yourself by losing weight" He was right, I did great during chemo. I didn't have the bad stomach upset and acid reflux like a lot of people that go through it.
Good luck, please let us know how you are doing

Topic: RE: Suggestions for a place to talk about being a caregiver?
I just wanted to let you know that my heart goes out to you. You are going through a very hard time and it's easy to let those comfort foods slip back in.
I would suggest making yourself a protein shake a couple times per day to thwart off any bad choices. I know when I do this it really helps.
Also, I would turn to your American Cancer Society. They have a wealth of information and help. This is why I relay so please go see them. They also helped me out tremendously while I was undergoing chemo for breast cancer a little less than 2 years ago.

Hi Everyone,
I have been researching the different WLS surgeries over the past few months and have it narrowed down between the Sleeve and RNY.
I was wondering if anyone else on here has been diagnosed with Thyroid cancer before deciding on WLS and which surgery did you choose and why?
I have gained approximately 140lbs since the cancer (diagnosed in 2008) and can not loose it no matter what I do :(

I just wanted to wish you well.  I know another woman who had colon cancer & is in remission now (& doing very well!), but she did not have a WLS.

You probably have a lot more answers now, but my general advice as a cancer survivor & WLS person (I worried about my own effects of malabsorption on adequate nutrition & nausea), just take one day at a time b/c otherwise you will drive yourself crazy.

If you havn't heard of it, Gilda's Club is a national organization that I found very helpful - doesn't matter what type of cancer you have.  They have support groups, activities, & workshops.

In addition, there's a program called, "Look Good, Feel Better" that your hospital's social worker has likely told you about, but do look into it if you haven't.  It's a great class with lots of free make up!!  Made me feel good :)

Best of luck,
Lisa
