Topic: RE: Thyroid Cancer survivor - which WLS would be best??
I had Hodgkin's Lymphoma just after I reached my stable weight, though I had a DS. With malabsorption, it was more difficult to ensure I got the nutrients I needed. Mostly b/c the nausea medications weren't as effective and my appetite sucked so taking the amount of vites I needed was very challenging. That's my opinion on malabsorption & cancer, though I don't think these issues would be as challenging with the RNY vs the DS b/c the RNY is a lot less malabsorption.
I've been on the boards a long time now & my only general thoughts b/w the two is to make sure that you really can committ to the vites needed with the RNY (more than the sleeve) even if you should get sick again. It adds another challenging dimension.
My personal opinion, I think the sleeve is a better option than the RNY. DSers have the sleeve also. What I've seen is that the people who keep a good amount of restriction are those who stop eating when they're full vs when they're stuffed - that will stretch out your tummy. The good news is, even if you do tend to start eating until you're very full down the road (think 2 - 3 yrs post-op), it only takes about 1 week of careful eating to get your restriction back.
Good luck to you!

Topic: RE: Colon Cancer and the Lap Band
Thank you for the reply, and congratulations on being cancer free!!!!! I really appreciate it! It is comforting to know that I am not the only one with colon cancer who had weight loss surgery. Mine is in the rectosigmoid area, I have surgery on Monday and treatment should follow after depending on what he finds during the surgery.
I went yesterday to my band surgeon to have the fluid taken out because they said I will have to have the Nasogastric tube can't do without it. I also talked to him about a revision, I have gained about 25 pounds from my lowest he said that I will have to wait a year after the completion of chemo before he revises me. He did say that I can have my band refilled, I lost 90 with the band haven't had any major complications so will do that until I can revise.
You have inspired me and given me hope, and wow way to rock your DS!!!!
Thanks,
Michele

I too just wanted to wish you the best. I had my D/S i June 2006 as was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer in August 2008. The nausea was horrible. I also lost all sense of taste. I went from a pre op weight of 376 lbs. to a post D/S weight of 176 lbs. While being treated I dropped down to 147 lbs.
I responded well to chemo and radiation and have been cancer free since Feb 2009. I am still dealing with the after effects of the chemo and radiation. In fact I had a surgery last Friday to repair the anal fistula that was a by product of the chemo.
I hope ALL is going well for you,
Fight the good fight !!!!

Topic: RE: atypical breast cancer and chemotherpy and gastrobipass surgury
mine was triple positive. Very aggressive as well and in 2 lymph nodes. I was staged as IIa. Triple negative however is a bit more aggressive than mine. I pray they did not find it in your nodes. Please let me know how you did.
I did not have to have to have radiation. With my cancer they said they got it all out with the surgery and the chemo was my "insurance policy" I am now also on armadex for 5 years and had a total hysterectomy 2 months ago to put me in permanent menopause. The chemo they thought did that but my periods came back with avenges in February.
Yes, I do like the Mayo, I feel as if I am treated very well there.
Good Luck! Please give me an update, I do care.

i had thyroid cancer in 2003. Since then I went from a 145 to 278. I've finally decided on the sleeve after a lot of research. For me, with the bypass, i was afraid of mal absorbtion of nutrients because I'm also vit b def. I think the thyroid situation will make weight loss slower but the sleeve is the tool for me! Keep doing your research and see what your doctor thinks is best for you! good luck!!

Hi Ruth...Thank You for answering me...I was told there is no chemo or radiation for Kidney Cancer. They usually remove the kidney and then we pray the other one behaves. As long as I don't have the cancer return..( steming from the kidney ) I will be able to receive chemo or radiation, depending on what kind returns.
Thank You...and all the best to you!

Hi...They told me the only treatment for Kidney cancer is to remove it if possible and there is no chemo or radiation...I'm on the search for a new Kidney Doctor, I kinda fired my first one...he was no help. Right now the Doctors seen more worried about my vitamin malobsorbtion. They keep upping my units...now the vitamins are a on script. Thank You for answering me back.
