I just had a partial right nephrectomy on Tuesday. Pathology report not yet back so will find out in a couple of weeks but most likely RCC stage 1. Last spring I had a left partial nephrectomy RCC stage 1. I credit my weight loss surgery with saving my life since at this stage removal of the cancer is the only treatment necessary. My cancer was discovered when i requested an ultrasound to check out what I assumed was gall stones due to my weight loss. That ultrasound led to a CT scan which showed the left kidney cancer and a "shadow" on the right. Lots of changes in my life led to many poor diet choices over this past year and I have regained about 35 pounds..yikes! Now that both surgeries are completed I need to simply kick myself in the butt and make those good food choices again. Back to tracking food with Sparkspeople and getting stronger day by day. I hope you will be doing OK following your surgery which could be any day now. Good luck and keep positive thoughts.
Hi Kelly I just read your post I too have Renal cell carcinoma... I was diagnosed yesterday.. June 10 2013 I will be having surgery in the next 2 weeks... My tumor or mass is 9.9 cm almost the whole kidney... I was told like you that I would not need chemo or radiation... I was glad to see your post... I worried about protein levels and how much would be safe for me to take now... Thank you for posting what you have done and what you are going through...
Makes me feel better knowing that we can live a healthy life with WLS and one kidney... I hope I find out tomorrow or the next day when I will be having surgery... he said within the next 2 weeks.
What does a Nephrologist do? Again thanks

Hi I am Susan and I am wondering if any WLS that had the RNY has had Renal cell Carcinoma?? They found a mass on my left kidney and now I have to have it taken out... was wondering if anyone is living with only 1 kidney and how are you doing?? Also wanted to know how much protein is a safe level for the kidney? I would love to hear what everyone has to say... Thanks..

I had thyroid cancer 15 years ago and I gained lots of weight. I had RNY 4 years ago because that is what my insurance would pay for. It is a lot of work, but they all are. I have lost 190 pounds. A little has crept back but I am working on that. You must stay focused and follow the rules. I would not change a thing about my surgery.
Best wishes
Cheryl
Hi
I was diagnosed at 35 as well, I am cancer free now and I was told too that weight and diet plays a large role in the cancer coming back. I am glad you can be a testament.
I consider my weight loss surgery to be my Saviour. A bit over a year post op I began having episodes of pain which i assumed were gall bladder attacks. i told my GP that I was having pains and asked to be tested for gall bladder issues. An hour long ultrasound showed suspected kidney cancer which was confirmed a few weeks later with CTscan. This showed a small tumour on my left kidney as well as a suspicious area on my right kidney. This diagnosis led me to be referred to my wonderful surgeon Dr. Pautler who performed a robotic assisted laproscopic partial nephrectomy in May of 2012. I am now scheduled for the same procedure on my right kidney because the suspicious area has further developed and is most likely the same..clear cell renal carcinoma. These tumours were caught early (stage 1) because my weight loss surgery caused me to be pro active about pain and the fat loss allowed the ultrasound to see into my body well enough to discover both kidney issues. I am thankful every day for my sleeve and my continued good health.
I had TC three years ago and my weight is up there. I am glad I found out what was making me feel so old, but this weight is going nowhere, and I fear I will be diabetic too. Knees are killing me. I know I need it, but am feeling guilty about the money which even with insurance is going to really be hard on us. Still I think knee replacement is like seventy grand each. Diabetes is expensive to treat. I used to love to move, and I would so like to be able to ride a bike again. I have to work and am worried about the time I will need off. Have no idea which surgery to have. The band just plain looks like it would bug me to death.
I am very pleased that my husband is supportive of the idea though. I am very surprised, and please at this. He is a good one this man of mine. Has been for like 35 years.
How do you choose which hospital is best? There is one near me I like but is a center of excellence a name they can just call themselves? or does some entity bless them with this title?
I had Stage 1B Clear cell renal cell carcinoma diagnosed on 4/12/12 when I started having VERY bloody urine one night at work! I had a tumor the size of a baseball on my right kidney, I had it removed two weeks later, which happened to be my son's 8th birthday! I didn't need any further treatment since my lymph nodes and surgical margins were clear.
My PCP sent me to a nephrologist. He told me that I didn't need to worry about my protein intake. He also put me on a blood pressure medication to help protect the remaining kidney from the increased blood flow. I've been following up with the Urological surgeon every 6 months. I had an ultrasound in January of my remaining kidney and of the spot where my right kidney used to be and everything was fine. I also recently had a partial thyroidectomy but that wasn't cancerous. I will see the renal doctor again in July. Was supposed to see him in April but due to my surgery I had to reschedule..
If you haven't seen a kidney doctor, I'd highly recommend it. The urological surgeon didn't seem to have a problem with it. Good luck to you!

Ohh... then this is great. Well, I would also like to share this article I've read, Art and Meditation Hamper Stress for Cancer Patients. Try reading it as well.
