My gyn would not take my ovaries cause I am still only 45, but I figure, one or two battles at a time. They are next on my list, as soon as I get these other two out of the way.

I never did brca testing...my family history is so strong that my insurance company did not require it. I am also being scheduled for a hysterectomy later this fall. My opinion is that i am not losing all this weight just to get cancer caused by an estrogen dump. (Estrogen is stored in fat).
My bariatric surgeon was like, "wait a year" when I went to see him the other day. I have a non-h pylori peptic ulcer, which is being treated with meds. The catch is that I need to have these other two surgeries while I still have good insurance. ( I will be getting Medi-Cal in December, which means they wont be covered.)
So I am seeking a second opinion...My plastics guy was all okay with it, and so was my primary doc...but I am going to consult with a second bariatric surgeon just to see what they say.
Im a little hesitant, only because of the ulcer, but it's about life choices...gotta go one time or another, so I am just going to do the next things and get more information.
As of right now the hysterectomy is scheduled for October, and the Mastectomy for end of July.

Thanks Jo Anne.
I got insurance approval this morning, and even though it is not scheduled yet, I too feel a big sense of relief. They can probably get me in in about two to three weeks, and I got my insurance extended for another month so that helps.
The peace of mind that is already starting to exist in my brain lets me know that this is a useful decision for me. And I am lucky to have a surgeon who doesn't mind doing the surgery so soon after my RNY.
I have had that surgery. My rny was in august 2009 and my mastectomy was in august 2011. I have the brca1 gene mutation. I had immediate reconstruction from my abdomen. This allowed me to get most of the work of a tummy tuck and get it covered by my insurance. My panni was all that bad as some that I have seen but I did have some sagging skin that is now gone. Recovery wasn't as bad as I expected. I was in the hospital for 5 days. I left the hospital with 4 drains - one on each side of the breast area and 2 in the mons area. The two in my chest each came out one at a time but the lower two both came out at the same time. I can't remember how long they were in but it wasn't a very long time - probably 2 weeks for the last ones. I was able to move around relatively easily. I still had some fat clothes so hiding the drains was relatively easy. My upper back bothered me for a few days - just achey - probably because I was walking around a little hunched over for the first few days. But that passed quickly. I had to lay off of exercise for a few weeks and then just go back with light cardio. I think at 8 weeks I was cleared to do whatever I wanted but started slow.
I had no idea how much the threat of breast cancer preyed on my mind until I woke up in the hospital after sugery and felt such a sense of relief. Feel free to come back with more questions if you want move of my experience.

Hi So glad I am not alone. I had Gastric bypass Rouen Y in 2005. I had abdominalplasty in Jan 2007- 6 months later I had a complete hysterctormy for Ovarians Cancer Fibrosarcoma. Last year was cancer free . this year having issues with stomach upset- decreased appetite and lost more wieght.. Having abdominal ultrasound and blood work to figure out what is going on. During my hysterectomy they had to cut through the mesh for a hernia and also remove some areas where I had scar tissure and internal stitches from the tummy tuck.. Will keep you posted But STILL A WLS and OVARIAN CANCER SURVIVOR..

So....I found out today that I can possibly qualify for a prophylactic mastectomy, given a lot of medical and family cir****tances. I am 2 months out from RNY ave lost about half of my weight that I wanted to lose post op. (Lost 215 total, 198 before surgery).
Reason I am even talking to the doctor is that my insurance is going to end in a month and I wanted to get stuff covered while I still had coverage. Long boring story.
What I wanted to know is if anyone has had a mastectomy after their RNY.. and if so what is your experience...how long after did you have it? What kind of upper body mobility did you have afterwards and how did the mastectomy affect your exercise?
..doc is saying I can wait to do the reconstruction til after I lose my weight, (60 or so more pounds) but there is probably enough skin on my tummy to do the reconstruction now, and it would be cheaper.
I am honestly more concerned about the pre-emptive strike on more cancer than I am about the TT or the looks of the reconstruction, per se.
Thoughts?
I have been thru breast cancer 2x. First time diagnosed when my son was 5 weeks old, that was December 2009. I was diagnosed again in May 2012. I did chemo, radiation and mastectomy the first time. I had to do chemo again this 2nd time. I am hoping losing 100+ lbs will help to not get it back again.I will be on Herceptin the rest of my life now.
Keep up the good fight!
My doctor has never discussed any diet restrictions or issues. I'm not sure if this was because he was aware last year that the surgery this year would be necessary and he felt that was more of an issue or maybe my diet isn't an issue because all my kidney function test results have been good. The kidney function specialist I saw last fall said my function is better than a "normal" woman of my age. Made me laugh and I told him there is nothing "normal" about me.
At this point I know that the kidney function specialist will be testing and doing followup for a minimum of annually for 5 years. My kidney surgeon will be doing 6 month follow ups for 2 years and then annual for 5 years to ensure that nothing new develops. I think that my bilateral kidney cancer was likely caused due to workplace exposure to chemical vapors. i worked for many years doing plastics extrusion. Basically setting up and operating machines that melted PVC adding resins to it and shaping it. Much of the time I had to put myself directly in the off gassing in order to ensure the process was operating correctly. In the early years we did this with no ventilation and later years I did my part of the job then moved the air vent into place so the factory didn't fill with fumes but had to move those vents frequently while I moved into place to look over the process.
I know that my sleeve still works. Over the last few weeks I decided to go back to the type of liquid diet that I had to do prior to VSG. I had no trouble sticking to it and really wasn't hungry. Proof that dieting is possible I just have to keep myself away from the fast foods and carbs. Carbs are really my huge downfall. Bread or pastry make me hungrier even if it is whole grain (recommended by my dietitian). It seems that looking at the posts here under "what are you eating today" will show the best eating habits for long term success.
Good luck with your surgery. I am getting better day by day...able to sleep a bit more now that I am not so uncomfortable. I did have bad reaction to tape adhesive and now have what looks like burns in a few spots on my belly. Those probably hurt more than the surgical sites.
Girl I am sorry to hear about your nephrectomy... Hope you are healing well.. I have faith that you will get back on track with your weight... just go back to when you started.... do your protein shakes and your 64 ozs of water.... oh by the way how much protein are they saying you needed when you had just the one kidney...I talked to a nut the other day and he said I may have to cut my intake down to 70 grams.. I do 90 to 110 grams a day now...
Lord I feel very blessed now... that I will still have 1 good kidney left... nothing is showing up on the right one.... Hoping it will stay that way... still have not got a surgery date yet... Monday I am getting on the phone again and calling them and seeing if they are going to hurry up and set this date.... I still need to see my heart dr.. I will be calling him Monday also...
Please keep me informed on how you are doing... I will let you know when I get a date too... blessing and sending up healing thoughts for you... Please get back on track for your health... You have come this far and have gone through so much with this to let it all slip away....
