prophylactic mastectomy after RNY

Hi there, I saw my surgeon yesterday, and finished the antibiotics yesterday, He said it looked really good. In spite of the infection risk, the restiched wound has healed, and that was the immediate worry. I had some kind of bug last week, so resting a lot, but I am better that way. So....I told them to wait til after Christmas to do any more cutting on me....but in January they are going to biopsy the lump, and I did a scan already on the surrounding tissue where my uterus was...they don't think that there is anything remarkable there, but given the brain stuff, and the other bla bla bla stuff they were being careful...I am Soooo glad they did the hysterectomy and the mastectomy both. At least if it is some other kind of cancer, it's not THAT. Something about I have to have a lot of labs to check for certain proteins and I might decide to be in a study for pancreatic cancer research cause I lost two uncles to that....I don't have that yet, but they want to do a longitudinal study of folks with family members who have had it, to check for risks over time. I figure if I am in that study, they will be keeping a double eye on me that way....at any rate, more will be revealed.....I'm just trying to get through the holidays roommate is really sicker than me...he may have heart failure and just put on oxygen at night. and is still smoking (outside the house)...he might be having his last Christmas, and I am trying to be well enough to drive him to his family, which is two hours away. rented a car for the holiday week...so I have a pretty full plate. Thanks for asking....how are things with you? I bet you must be enjoying the new you?
Glad to hear that things are healing well. It is always good when open wounds close quickly. It dramatically reduces the risk of infection and we have enough stuff that we are already recovering from. Probably a good idea to wait until after the holidays to do any more stuff. It will give you a chance to bounce back some and also enjoy the holiday.
Interesting about the pancreatic cancer study. Brca patients have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer. I believe it is a slight increase for brca1 but a much larger increase for brca2 patients. I went back to the oncology folks a couple of months ago when I became aware of this for a consult. Since I am brca1, they didnt see the need for any additional testing at this time But they did say that if my glucose were to consistently go to 120 or above that I should come back for another discussion.
Sorry to hear about the roommate. It is nice that you can be there for him. I understand that smoking is a difficult habit to give up. My parents both smoked for many years before they were able to kick the habit. If he is in that bad of health perhaps he figures why put himself through that misery. Your support will be a great help to him.
I am doing good. I had injured my hamstring and was out of the gym for a few weeks but I am back now. So life is returning to normal for me. My incisions are looking really good. I go back for another laser treatment at the beginning of January. I am thinking of having some facial work done. I have been researching that a little and will chat with the doc when I see him in January. Starting to get excited about it. That will be my final procedure. Only sad thing is then this doc and I will part ways. I like him because he teaches me lots of things.. We chat upa storm when I am in is office. I tell him about my brca1 and bariatric stuff - so he learns some things too.
Not sure how much I will be on during the holidays, so if I don't chat with you again before, you have a great holiiday and make sure you take care of yourself along with that roommate.

Just wanted to wish you a happy holiday. Hope that you are healing well and that the roommate is able to enjoy the holiday as well. What a transformation you have had this year. You've done alot to improve your health this year. I know that there are things still looming in the new year but be happy with what you have accomplished so far.

Hoping your holidays were good and that you had some good healing time. How are you feeling? Have you scheduled the additional testing yet? How is your roommate feeling?
i have been at my vacation home since right before Christmas. Kind of depressing now that it is coming to an end. The only good thing is that since I have a doctors appointment on Monday, I will work from home afterwards. Makes going back to work easier - lol.
