Thyroid Cancer

 Hello everyone,

It's been just over 2 years since my RNY and I've been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.  I'm scheduled for a thyroidectomy in two weeks and I'm so scared.  I remember waking up from the RNY surgery and feeling short of breath and it really scared me.

Has anyone had a thyroidectomy?  Can you tell me what it was like to have the surgery?

Another thing that is really concerning me is the possible damage to the parathyroid gland.  The surgeon told me that they will observe me for 2-3 days to see how my calcium levels are after the surgery and they will keep me there until my calcium stabalizes.  He says that some RNY patients have trouble with stabalizing even if the parathyroid isn't damaged.  I'm happy that he seems to know his stuff and I feel like I'm in good hands.

This is just such a major bummer.  Any supportive thoughts would be helpful!

Thanks!

HI there,
I really only know one person who has ever had thyroid cancer and that was the woman who did the pre-admitting at the hosptial when I had my double mastectomy. She had a scar on her throat and told me that she just got back to work. She told me her prognosis was very good!
I hope your surgery goes well.

 Thanks Nora,

How are you doing?

The prognosis is excellent for this type of cancer, but it can be hard for bypass patients to regulate their calcium afterwards.  So scary!

I'm trying to hang in there too!
I had another surgery scheduled for May 22nd. I will have a total hysterectomy and the removal of a couple of lung nodules. We are keeping our finger's crossed that the nodules aren't malignant. The initial biopsy said they were "non diagnostic"
Good luck to you too!

 Hello, lovingthisjourneyoflife!

Thanks for the information.  We definitely are on similar journeys.  I also have Papillary.  During my thyroidectomy they found that it spread to at least one of the two lymph nodes they removed. Right now it's stage 1 but they'll know for sure after they do the I-123 scan.

Total thyroidectomy - May 21, 2012
RAI (Raodioactive Iodine for those who don't know) - June 13, 2012

So it's interesting that you said you gained weight.  I thought I would, too, but I have lost 10 lbs since the surgery...what about 2 weeks ago?  I haven't lost weight that fast since my "honeymoon" period.  I want to be happy but it's making me kind of nervous because who knows why I'm losing it so fast.  It may help that I had already been on Synthroid for a year so my body was adjusted to the medicine.  Of course I called the doc and they aren't concerned so I should probably relax and enjoy the loss!

I have a great team and I'm really happy but still really nervous about the RAI.  Did you take pills?  They said they will give me 10 capsules of I-123 and then as long as there were no other metastases I will get a very low dose of I-131 also in capsule form.  I was worried they were going to be like those honking calcium pills but as long as they are capsules my pouch seems to do fine.

I'd love to know what the RAI was like for you, if you're willing to share!

Thanks again!!

hmmm.. I had thryodectomy for papilary thyroid cancer 2yrs following gastric bypass.
I am here to tell you to watch your colon now..as that RAI can cause damage to your colon.. 3%of patients get colon cancer and since that RAI is being absord in intestines and not the stomach as it would for others. please watch your colon and get regular colonoscopies.
I now had rectal cancer 3 years later..
be vigilant..

I had my RNY done three years ago and I had half of my thyroid removed a week ago.  The pathology reports came back yesterday and it is Stage 2 thyroid cancer. The surgeon wants to wait three more weeks to remove the other half of my thyroid and then I go back to the Endochrinologist to schedule the RAI treatment.  Being that I'm still a bit stunned by the diagnosis, I honestly only heard about half of what she said after "it's cancer" so I've been on the internet this morning looking to understand where I go from here.

I can say with complete certainty that my RNY had nothing whatsoever to do with the developement of this cancer.  I've had suspicious nodules in my thyroid for 15 years ~ I just finally decided to have the surgery and see what they were.  Now I'm glad I did.  If it were not for the 100 lb weight loss from my RNY, I would have had more complications such as high blood pressure, borderline diabetis and sleeping disorders to deal with on top of this.

To answer your question ~ the thyroid surgery was a breeze. i was in by10:30 and home by 3:30. No problems at all, in fact I don't really remember much of that whole day.

I had thyroid cancer in 2008. My rny was in 2001. I had stage 1 thyroid cancer and had the thyroid romoved plus 5 lymphnodes removed. It was done outpatient. I also did the I131 in the hospital a month later.
I got very dehydraed three weeks later, lost my taste and ended up in the hospital for four days.
Now I have low cortisol level and have to be on a low dose if prednisine. but they are saying that is not from the cancer. My mom had Cushings disease so this is a form of it.
I did gain 30 pounds but lost it, and am back down to what I was. So that is good.
