Topic: Newbie, 3 weeks post op
Hello, I am 3 weeks post op and have never felt so bad in all my life. Having a very difficult time, and just looking for some encouragement. I was severely nauseated from the moment I woke up post op. Ended up staying 2 nights, instead of one. My first week home got better, and I really did feel good, aside from my complete aversion to the protein supplements. Couldn't get them down for anything! Day 15, all h*** broke loose...the nausea returned with a vengeance...crippling, disabling nausea. Rare actual vomiting though. I am on Zofran and Compazine suppository. No one prepared me for this..... I am so blue, truly questioning my decision. I have a wonderful husband who is doing his best to be supportive, but, you know, life goes on, and I would just feel worse if I insisted he change his schedule any more than he has, just to sit here and watch me feel lousy. Yesterday and today I have been able to tolerate a couple protein shakes, and clear liquids are not a problem. I think my biggest problem right now is the emotional. I just want to feel good again!

Hi there!

Can someone give me the supplement/vites list for us DSers or direct me to where I can find it?

Thanks in advance!

Tresha, After my revision I'm down 56 pounds, I certainly was expecting it to be more by now... but I had a big surgery hear back in March and it has slowed my activity way down, I'm still not in full speed but I'm sure still working on getting there... best of luck to you!

HI Debbie,

Thank you for providing this information.  I am a RNY ( 4/2003) and al beit I lost 103 lbs I did not get anywhere near my goal weight of 145-150, so I was considering the DS and all the information I have been reading has really scared me.  I only need a jump start and something to stop the dumping.   I had considered the band but it seems if you get a band revision you will eventually have to have another surgery to have band removed or there is slipage and issues with the port.

Good Luck with your continued weightloss!

Topic: RE: BPD and normal bowel movements
Gerry-I had BPDDS in 2002, & had diarrhea with severe flatulence, abdominal bloating , cramping every day since until just a few weeks ago. I actually conquered it accidentally, but now that I know the cure, I want to scream it to everyone. I decided to try The South Beach Diet as I need to lose about 30 lbs. it requires you to only eat meat and veggies the first 2 weeks (no bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, fruit of any kind). You may slowly reintroduce these the 3rd week. But after 2 days with none of those foods, my GI system and BMs were NORMAL! And they continued until I ate a sandwich 2 weeks later! So, after research , I have figured out that the malabsorption properties of my DS (I have 4 feet of functioning small intestine), forced me into having Gluten-Intolerance. Bad that I have to limit bread, pasta, pizza, all that, but good that I now know I can feel normal with certain dietary changes. Maybe this would help you.

Topic: RE: what is wrong with the BPD?
Agree with Msbatt.... I had BPDDS in 2002, lost over 150 lbs easily, with several health issues resolving, thought I had hit the jackpot. But I have struggled with anemia, low vit D, low calcium, low protein, horrible digestive issues every day. I have other chronic health problems unrelated to the weight. I now must take more than 2 x the amt of meds needed to achieve proper amt in my bloodstream due to the fact that I do not absorb them all as I have only 4 feet of working small intestine (the other 20 was bypassed). Think 40 or more pills a day. And I did get lucky just recently to find that if I eliminate wheat products from my diet (think gluten-intolerant: breads, pasta, pizza, all that good stuff) my digestive issues resolve. But here is where I just have to be blunt... Every day since my surgery until I eliminated gluten, I suffered extreme abdominal bloating, painful cramps and gas, awful smelly flatulence to which I could not control when it would happen or stop it from happening (out in public...). And the worst-daily diarrhea, sometimes even preventing me from leaving my home because once it got started, it continued off and on up to 3 hours at a time. If I had to have a bowel movement away from home, sometimes I would just cry because of how mean other women would be that might enter the restroom. And as for the BMs and gas, there was no "holding it". When I had to go, I had to go. Thank Goodness the change in diet has made me normal again. But those negatives had such an effect on me over the years I want each person considering BPDDS to know what could happen. I am sure there are plenty of great responses to that surgery, but if I had to do it over again, I'd do the RNY like my husband.

My Dr is happy with the weight I have lost I am still over 220lbs but I lost 130lbs so he is happy, he is just not great with my bloodwork, he forgets to let me know when things are getting low, so I have decided to monitor my own results, thanks to the DS site.

GIRL!!!!!!!!! WTF is wrong with you!!!!!blush  Go back to the hospital have them put in a PICC line and put you on TPN for like 3-6 months to get your body back on track and then once you are on track STAY ON TRACK. The other posters are correct you are SEVERELY malnourished and there is NO WAY you can rectify the situation with food. You need TPN for the protein and the vitamin regulation. Why do I care? Because I pulled the same "stunt" and almost left my children without a mom and my husband without a wife. I was placed on TPN last December (2011) while in the hospital and was taken off in April (2012). That saved my life. There is NO WAY I would be here without it.  If it means that you have to go to every hospital in the state then do it. MAKE THEM LISTEN!!!!!!!

Keep us informed!

Topic: Does your PCP give you a hard time about weight after WLS?

I have been overweight all of my life at which point now I am SMO. I know some people make it to goal while others do not. I would be fine being in the overweight section of the BMI chart but when I was there many years ago my PCP still said I needed to lose weight. After weight loss surgery and being a few years out some people just can not lose another pound no matter how hard they try. So does your PCP still give you crap about your weight because your BMI is still in the overweight range ? Or have they backed off seeing how much weight you have lost?
