I've heard of it being done in Europe on normal weight people, just for t2diabetes. Maybe target European studies? I'll look and link if I find something, but it won't be today - have to go do the fathers day thing right now.

She needs the duodenal switch without a VSG. There is such a thing as a biliopancreatic diversion WITHOUT duodenal switch. Dr. K.'s answer is entirely accurate.

Elizabeth,

What about if you are of normal weight, and just need the bottom, intestial portion for insulin/diabetes.  Would this be the surgery to have?  I only ask because I have a co-worker who has insulin diabetes, and I e-mailed Dr. K and got not a good answer.  My co-worker was diagnosed 5 years ago.  But is in good health, and not overweight/obese.

Here is an e-mail to Dr. K about this:
I have a co-worker, with no obesity problems, but he has diabetes (Insulin Resistant) what is the name of that procedure, where Dr. K does not touch the stomach, but just does the intestional portion of the surgery?  I have looked and looked for it, but since I do not have the actual name, all I have come up with is the procedure where the stomach is also operated on as well.  Any information and/or research, and even internet links that you may have and can pass along to me for him would be GREAT as well!!!!!!

And here is his reply back to me:
(Nice to have a reply from the doc himself, I find myself fortunate for that)
Hello, It is the duodenal switch without the sleeve gastrectomy part of the operation.  Thank you.

I guess that settles that. Not much to misunderstand there. I'm assuming you're not in the US?? since I didn't think any surgeons did BPD any longer here.

It's great that you're on top of the nutrition, and if anyone can help keep us on the right track it's Vitalady.

Who was your surgeon?  Why did they say they did a procedure that you did not "sign up for"?

Glad you are on top of your vites/supplements.

You should post on the DS forum to let folks know that this is a (horrifying) possibility.

Hi,  I am in contact with Vitalady and I watch my nutrition pretty closely.

My surgery report says:

SCHEDULED SURGERY:  Biliopanceatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch

SURGERY PERFORMED: Modified Scopinaro Biliopacreatic Diversion

So no DS for me.......................I had this surgery Feb. on 2009.  I lost all of my excess weight and seem fairly healthy.  I do take lots of vits.  about 50 a day. I'm on Michelle's deficiency vits. program.  I do lots of protein shakes.  I like the taste of them so I'm pretty lucky.  I get iron infusions once a year but that is about it.  The worst thing that has happened is I lost alot of hair and it hasn't come back.  That being said,  I know my prolonged health is much more fragile than yours and only time will tell how well I do.   If I had to do it all over again I'd have gone to Dr. K. in California.

lol...but I knew it wasn't a ds forum,  that is why I was scratching my head watching some ask why this forum was needed since there was already a DS forum...

I just saw there was a new board, and wanted to see if anything was here. A few DSer's, and you, are apparently very curious, lol. I'm not sure there's enough actual BPDers for there to be any action on this board. Even the one post that is by a BPDer, I'm hoping she is wrong and misunderstood thinking the BPD-DS was a BPD.

I'm sorry. I don't know when you had surgery, or who the surgeon was, but is it possible you are mistaken? Forgive me if you know this, but I only mention this because the names confuse many. The BPD-DS, is what is often just called the DS. If it us JUST the BPD part, then it's a BPD.

If you in fact have a BPD, or Scopinaro, (again, sorry if you know this) then you need to be in contact with Vitalady. She has made it her life's work to understand our malabsorption and vitamin needs, and is way more savvy with any of it then any doctor or nutritionist I've met. You will have to be very vigilant with the lab work and supplements.
