Topic: Finally, I'm glad to see a BPD form....
I'm glad to see this form.  It may not be as active as the DS form, but there are a few of us out here that wonder how others are doing that had the BPD.  Tell your story here, and let's begin a support like the DS.  If you had the BPD, you know there IS a difference.

I had a BPD 8 years ago.  I wanted the DS, but my Doctor convinced me that there was very little difference between the two and this one was just as good and had been around a lot longer.  I thought I had done my research, and the DS wasn't as common yet, so I consented.  Also, my brother in law had it done a year before me, and was doing great.  I went to support groups for 9 months before my surgery and my surgeon was on the Hospital Board and came highly recommended.  So, I did feel like I was getting the best option.  I lost 100 lbs in 9 months and all my labs were great.  Life was good!

1 year after my surgery, when I went for my annual follow-up I was told that my surgeon was on medical leave; 6 months later he passed away.  Since then, NOBODY around here (Kansas City area) knows anything about this surgery.  I hang out on the DS board for my idea's and support.  My brother in law had some issues arise, a surgeon said he did reverse most of his BPD and he has gained most of his weight back. I didn't think it could be reversed, but that's what he say's.  Anyway, when I started gaining (45 lbs in 3 years), I  began to get frustrated.  But when I was honest with myself, I realized that I ate A LOT of carbs.

Recently I meet another woman that had gone to my surgeon (9 years ago) and she too had gained about 45 lbs.  However, after 8 months of getting back to the basics (low carb, high protein) she had lost 49 lbs.  What an absolute encouragement to me.  Now after only 3 weeks of low carb, high protein I have lost 6 lbs.  Still a long way to go, but I now know  it can be done if I stick to it.  Like she told me, it's hard work, but we do have a tool, maybe not the best one, but if we use it we can still be successful!  I had read success stories on the DS board of people gaining and losing agian, but I wasn't sure it was or would be the same for me becuase I had the BPD not the DS.

So, I will still hang out at the DS board because it is more active, but I will check this one too just because it is the surgery I had.

Just in case you are wondering, I did have my labs done in the spring and all looked good except my vit D.  My PCP Dr gave me a prescription for it and I'll be going back this month to have it re checked.   If it's still low, I'll be going to vita lady and put an order in from her.

If you did have the BPD, please share!

Don't for get your ADEKs and B1(Thiamine), and protein supplements. You are now at the same deficiency and malnutrition risks as a DSer, because of the malabsorption.

Don't trust the DR.'s or the NUTS regarding your nutritional needs. The all recommend nutrients based on what RNY's need. You still have to eat like a RNY, because you still have a pouch, not a reduced stomach, like DSers. Don't get the oil-based ADEK's. Get Dry (usually have to be ordered, try Vitalady, Lucky Vitamin, or Puritain's Pride online), then grind the tablet or open the capsule into juice or applesauce and drink or eat it. You don't produce enough stomach acid to dissolve them and get the full benefit.

Topic: Mindfulness

I have found that being 'mindful' has proven to be a powerful tool too help me take care of myself. It requires me to be focused and present. It also helps me be aware and accountable. I am not always as 'mindful' as I'd like to be, but more so now than I was before I had my WLS.

To me, being 'mindful' means that I am aware of what I'm doing and accountable to myself for my actions. Everyone needs to find their own ways of doing this, but I think that we all need to do this in order to be successful in the long term.

*  Being mindful mean I get on the scale daily so that I am aware of my weight and am able to make corrections when they are still minor.
*  Being mindful means logging my intake and activity if I notice that my scales are 'swinging' more than the 7 lb range that seems normal for my body -- basically, up or down 3 lbs from my 'sweet spot'.
*  Being mindful means thinking about what I'm eating and if it is something that 'fuels' my body.
*  Being mindful means leveraging my tool and 'taking care of business first', so that I start my meal with protein, move on to colorful carbs and then indulge in whatever else I want with whatever room I have left over.
*  Being mindful means being aware of how I'm 'feeling' when I'm eating

What does being mindful mean to you?

Hi MsBatt, thanks for the comment, but I'm sure it's a BPD not a ERNY, my CC was over 100cm, which was shortened according to the formula used by the Dr. specific for my body weight. I also thought this but he explained the difference, close but not the same. Have a great week...

I think it's more likely that you have an extended RNY (ERNY), since you say they did NOT change your pouch.

Topic: RE: Cross between DS & BPD is what I ended up with...
Dr M has done LOTS of them. He's in my neck of the woods, so we see many of his ppl. He was doing them before he came to our area.

If you're thinking he's wet behind the ears, nope. Even the best docs run into surprises when they get to poking around.

Sounds like he did his best to give her as close to a true DS as possible. Most docs when faced with this would just cut to the chase, RNY, bam, done. Next?

The only reason that I know for "tissue squish" is lowish protein. My doc started protein loading us back in about 1999. Altho he said it was for US , I think it was much easier for him, especially revisions. He said the difference was the tissue-y gook vs soft pliable suede.

And I'm not blaming the patient! Some ppl just don't have much protein on board, even pre-op. I didn't. The good part is that I don't have to hold myself to some lofty pre-op standard. LOL

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.
