Hello everyone, I am glad that someone created this forum, because there are some people that had revisions to a BPD and are doing well, we all are not horror stories...I am one of them. I had a revision from a RNY to BPD, I still have my pouch, it is in good working order/functioning well; I still had my restriction so there was no reason to to take it down. My intestines were re- routed to the DS, I am pleased with my surgery. I gained back 100 pounds, from the RNY. I had the revision on 2/2/10 and I have since lost 120 pounds with no complications; I rarely have dumping if I eat something with high fructose, so I stay away from it; however I like that because it keeps me on my toes with sugar intake. I take my vitamins, vit A&D3, vit D3, a multi vit, Iron pill with vit C, and Calcium according to what my Dr. suggested, and my labs are good. So, please people don't knock this forum there may be something and/or someone that may be of help to someone that has had the same surgery or similar.

I think it's more likely that you have an extended RNY (ERNY), since you say they did NOT change your pouch.

Hi MsBatt, thanks for the comment, but I'm sure it's a BPD not a ERNY, my CC was over 100cm, which was shortened according to the formula used by the Dr. specific for my body weight. I also thought this but he explained the difference, close but not the same. Have a great week...

Don't for get your ADEKs and B1(Thiamine), and protein supplements. You are now at the same deficiency and malnutrition risks as a DSer, because of the malabsorption.

Don't trust the DR.'s or the NUTS regarding your nutritional needs. The all recommend nutrients based on what RNY's need. You still have to eat like a RNY, because you still have a pouch, not a reduced stomach, like DSers. Don't get the oil-based ADEK's. Get Dry (usually have to be ordered, try Vitalady, Lucky Vitamin, or Puritain's Pride online), then grind the tablet or open the capsule into juice or applesauce and drink or eat it. You don't produce enough stomach acid to dissolve them and get the full benefit.

Thanks for your comments. I am scheduled 1/24/12 for a BPD and I haven't found too many positive comments anywhere.

Are you SURE you are getting a BPD, and not actually a BPD-DS?

The BPD-DS is the most effective surgery available, but I thought the BPD wasn't even done in this country any more (as far as I knew). At least not by any decent surgeon. The few I know that actually have the BPD, had it long ago, or had complications, and lost additional body parts due to complications, and the surgeon had no choice.

If the BPD is what you are actually getting, you need to FIRE your surgeon, and go find a skilled one that is not giving people a stone age procedure. I'm hoping you were just mistaken, and are actually getting the BPD-DS. PLEASE make sure you know what they are doing before letting this happen.

daughter   just underwent a BPD reversal due to malabsorbtion issues for now going on 2 yrs.  She originally had the RNY precedure but regained alot of her weight.   The doctor did this precedure and it did shed her unwanted regained pounds, but she became so sick and protein levels dropped like crazy.   She began to swell from ademia as well.   The reversal was done and the common channel put back in place to where she will now absorb again.   The scary part is now that she has become so used to basically eating like a horse all day, she will now have to go back and eat sensibly with only protein and very little carbs and fat.    She does have a lapband also intact in "case" she should really begin to creep back up the scales at this point.    She will be taking in 100 gms of protein a day then dropping that to 60-80 eventually.    I pray that this precedure now that has been reversed will allow her to absorb again.    Did not do the DS with the precedure........I hope that this will bring about alot of feedback as we don't know of anyone else out there that has been through this precedure........most others have had the BPD/DS...........major difference........thanks for letting me post on here.

Like I said, I know very few people that actually have an actual BPD, and most had something go wrong and the surgeon had no choice but to give them a BPD or something close, or they had it long ago, and many of those folks had it reversed due to problems exactly like your daughter, and some died, so thank goodness she is back to absorbing more.

If you and your daughter aren't already, you MUST be in contact with Vitalady. I don't think TOS will allow me to put the link in here, but just put the .com after vitalady. Vitalady (Michelle) does sell supplements to bariatric patients, but she freely gives advice to help you get and/or stay healthy here, and never mentions a word about her business. Her prices are good, and and she has the formulations of things that work for our altered guts. Don't waste money on supplements we don't absorb.

She also knows the hybrid and oddball surgeries (she's one herself) so your daughter can tell her what she has, and Michelle will know exactly what she needs. My nutritionist was clueless at to my needs, and mine are much more common than your daughters. Her idea of fun is going around the country to weight loss things, and listening to seminars on our special vitamin needs and reading medical data on vitamins, so don't let the lack of letters after her name fool you - she is the best, and her advice is free.
