Sheryl,
Without knowing what supplements and food you consume now, from a beginning standpoint there are two really important things that you will probably need to increase, and that's protein and water. During a typical workout, I can drink anywhere from a quart to 2 quarts of water. Your body needs this to a) prevent dehyration and b) keeping well-hydrated enables your body to get the needed nutrients into the muscles and assists in post-exercise recovery as well. A good way to estimate how much water you lose during a workout would be to make sure you are well-hydrated before your workout, weigh yourself, do a workout without drinking anything and check your weight after your workout. In the alternative, if you drink while you are working out, just weigh yourself just before you begin your exercise and weigh yourself again after you finish. If your weight is lower, then you know you need to drink more water while exercising.
It is a good idea to get protein in within 30 minutes of an intense weight resistance workout. I make a protein shake every day in the gym, as this gets the protein and some carbs into my bloodstream the fastest after glycogen has been depleted from the muscles and this assists in rapid recovery after your workout. If you are consuming around 60-70 grams of protein a day, I would suggest increasing that to allow for additional protein needs with resistance training. Consult with your trainer as to how much additional protein you actually will need, provided that the trainer is qualified to make that assessment. I would also discuss upping your protein with the nutritionist that supports your surgeon's WLS program to evaluate what is a safe increase for you.

Welcome Sheryl!
This is a great forum, whether you're an experienced gym rat or just getting started! The important thing is that you start! And that's my daily mantra: get yourself to the gym, get that first 5 minutes of exercise in, and the rest will follow! I rededicate myself every day to fitness, and I find that 90% of the battle is getting there (and not talking myself out of it that day), and another 5% is doing that first 5 minutes of *vigorous* exercise. Once you've gotten past that, you will find it easier to do the rest of the workout! In that first five minutes, you get your heart rate up, your circulation going, your mood elevates (yes it happens that fast!), your energy level increases, and you're so pleased with yourself by now that you feel like doing more!
So why is it if exercise has all of these immediate benefits, that we aren't naturally motivated to go to the gym all the time? Because while we get these benefits, muscles, like other parts of our bodies, like to adapt to things that take the least amount of work, so we have to push the muscles. Our brains may know intellectually that exercise makes us feel good, but our muscles have to do the actual work to achieve this, and they would rather just hang out and chill! What the muscles experience with our workouts is a life of tearing down and recovery, even if our bodies as a whole benefit from it!
Just remember that when it comes to your fitness, there are no stupid questions here! Don't be afraid to ask them! And whining is allowed, as long as you're workin'!
With kindest regards, Donna E.

I am so glad I found this site.
I was wondering if I need any additional supplements since I am starting a new exercise program. I am religious with my vitamins, supplements, protein and water now, but will I need to increase my intake and what should I be taking. I have another appointment with my trainer this evening and would like to be able to sound somewhat educated when we discuss nutrition. I know what I need to do post op but not post op with a 3-4 day a week workout.
Thanks in Advance
Sheryl

Hey you just gotta know that you have this thing, it is called a life, (And a busy one at that). Sometimes **** happens, you know that you will not stop working out, and later one day here and there will not mean anything when you look back over all the workouts you did. So, what I am saying, is that you is doin great, and roll with it when life happens.

Topic: Working on the guilt thing
Ok guys, I am trying reeeeaaallly hard not to feel bad. I didn't get my workout in last night.
I think I have just cause, but at any rate I need to whine a little. Sorry, women's genetics I think....
I volunteer to speak at some of the Living Well classes that some wls patients are required to do. I usually do a basic casual q & A session so that they can ask those burning questions...I give everyone my email, tell them about our support group and OH if they don't already know about it. I love doing it. I did two groups this week, and one of them fell on a workout night. I think it is a really important thing to do, I worked literally up until the time to go speak, did my talk, then I got home for 30 minutes and then took my youngest to gymnastics. Then, back home by 10pm to eat and go to bed. Whew!
Tonight (Wed) is our support group meeting and I am on the panel (we are doing a mentorship and there are three of us) to discuss problems, success strategies, etc. Fortunately tonight is break night, then tomorrow it will be back at it as usual.
I know, one night won't kill me. But I already feel horrible for missing one day last week.
Make the guilt monster go away!!!
Thanks for letting me vent that, I know I am being silly I just need to work it out in my own mind.
Ok, whine session over. I am going to suck it up and be a man now...err...well you know what I mean.

Oh I have heard so many good things about that club. One of my tennis instructors said they had a good court to play on. If you ever have a guest pass and want a partner I would be happy to go with you. However, I cannot pay the $10 fee to get in.
I have an all club access membership at 24-Hour Fitness, I have VIP Guest Privlages meaning all my guest at the Antelope Club get in any hour for free. Tonight we had a great aqua class, circuit stations, really fun and different.
It's good to hear you have no anxiety about working out, I feel the same way. I have to admit that I do feel like a BBW at almost 6' tall, I tower over alot of the men working out. Don't get me wrong, I love being tall and curvy, but I know the weight is slowing down my quality of life. That's why I am so active now during my honeymoon period. So far I have lost 90 pounds in four months, I wanna lose another 100 pounds so I am not slowing down for anybody.
Good sharing with you, if you wanna get together for a weekly support meeting let me know I am attending a great one at Hazel and Madison, Thursday @ 7pm.

I blew right past the 15 week part, good for you, how are you feeling? Stay away from Motrin, Ibruprophren, Advil (I know it sucks, I used to love that stuf 12-15 times a day) I stick with heroin, or hash now
Tylenol is good if the pain is too much, but like the others said, do not (rerally in the beginnin) work too hard, you need to ease into it. I worked out all my life until the the last 10 years and it has been hard to start slow, I want to do all the animal stuff I used to do. What happens now if I do that is I get so sore I cannotr work out for days, then I lose my focus, and stop. So take it slow and easy for now. Got any Loratab? You live close

Hi Kelly!
I would have to agree with the trainer as well. I always do my weight training then finish with my cardio. You pre exhaust your muscles and it helps with increasing your caloric burn afterward. And actually it helps you burn more calories on your cool down time too.
Great job on the weight loss too! You just get out in that gym and show them what for, and they can see the transformation right before their eyes...now THATS magic!
Keep posting and let us know how you are doing!
Take care,
Valerie
