Topic: RE: Running questions
First, I am by no means an expert. You get what you pay for here. My advice and $2.50 will buy you a cup of coffee at Starbucks. The only thing that makes me an expert is that I had WLS and I run. Your questions are as follows: What do I need to know? Take it slow and buy good running shoes. I wear the Brooks Breast. They are designed for big runners. They cost $120 bucks but they are worth every penny. It almost killed my to hand over the money. I am very cheap An expert runner (my son) told me to buy them. I am on my second pair. Do I have to stretch? I don't stretch much before I run, but I stretch a lot after. Do I need to lose more weight before I start? I don't know your situation. For me, walking fast was not raising my HR enough and running was a natural progression from walking fast. What kind of surface is easiest to run on when starting out? I run on a bike path or cement. I don't like gravel because I get rocks in my shoes. Do I have to check my pulse? Staring out I don't think so...your body will let you know if you are pushing it too hard. I have wrist a HR monitor that reads HR from a strap on my chest... so it makes it very easy for me to check.(it helps me pace myself). Will running interfere with my weight lifting? No...You should do both. Weight training is just as important as running. Good luck!!

Topic: Whew - that was ROUGH!
Well I went through the certification day. I was so NERVOUS about this. I literally was having an axiety attack on the way - so I called a friend who I knew was going to be there and called her to calm me down. I got there and the reviewer was FANTASTIC! She went over every thing in great detail......so I'm praying I actually retained enough of it to pass!!! () I'm hoping things in my life will be "normal" again. The last few weeks have been rough and I feel like I can bru**** off to a learining expirence. Thank you all for listening to me.....I really was feeling like I'd fallen off my wagon and wasn't going to be able to get back on. I "think" I'll be back to normal after tonight. I'm going back to the gym and going to get a GOOD work out in!!!! My body has been CRAVING the endorphines....so I'm excited! I will chat with you all soon!!! Much Dee Dee

Hi Tami! Welcome aboard! You have come to the right place...Hey, where are ya John?? He's the runner around here. He can head you in the right direction on that one. Earl and I are the powerlifters in the group. In the beginning.... you won't get enough in and that's the miracle of the surgery. You literally starve off the weight. This will go on for about the first 4 to 6 months. After that, depending on what your total loss has been will determine how much you should get in. Runners generally need more calories because they burn it. Serious weight training requires much more protein because you are constantly tearing down muscle. The best tools to use to help you out are getting a Resting Metabolic Rate, and a body fat % completed at various stages of loss. It lets you know how much fat is going away, how much lean muscle mass you are developing, and how many calories you can consume at a resting state. Usually most larger hospitals have them in their nutrition departments, or can point you in the right direction. They are really good guides as to how you are doing. Plus follow up with a good nutrionist. I also do random diet audits on myself just to make sure I am getting enough of what I need in. Hope this helps. Increasing activity will increase weight loss. Find something you love to do and know you will go back to it again and again. It running is your thing...go for it. I would love to but I don't think I have the knees for it, and honestly (no offense John) I think that is THE most boring thing in the world. But, I love to train hard core...most people hate that...so see...find what you love! My office mate loves to swim...so I am getting her to go to the pool every chance she gets and it is helping her big time (yep she had it done too). So, good luck to you...come back often, this board is a great place to inspire you, and keep it positive. Lots of love here. Hugs, Val

Good for you. That's the attitude to take, and I think that is what Earl and I were trying to say. I tell people in the classes I speak to that the surgery doesn't fail you, you fail the surgery. It's garunteed to take 65-75% of your excess weight off. How much over that is up to you. The best advice is follow the program. John is right. Misery loves miserable company and that's one of the reasons I stay with a positive board. Good luck tomorrow! We will be thinking and praying for you! Hugs, Val

The first thing my surgeon taught me was how to fail the surgery. He is really good. No grazing for me! I'm not a big grazer though. My issue has always been about large portions at planned meal times. I can't imagine eating only 500 calories a day. lmao @ chinese buffet comment I have some hot and sour soup in the frige. Drained it to just have the broth today ;)

Hey everyone I'm very new to this message board. I just had my surgery in February and have dropped 40 pounds. I've always wanted to run a marathon and feel now that I'm loosing I'll be able to accomplish my goal. I've been walking and would now like to start running. Do any of you have any advice for beginner runners. Also....someone in one of the posts mentioned that sometimes people don't eat enough. Can someone tell me how we know we are getting enough. Thanks again to all....this board is VERY insperational. Tami~

John - You don't know how good it is to read your post. Especially the day before my surgery. I think you might be right. When I said I would never ever go on another comercial diet again I think I offended a few people there. I do understand everyone is different. I know how hard this is going to be. I feel more confident that with my age, lifestyle, and support system (including the experts on this board) that I am NOT going to gain the weight back. I REFUSE! I've made so many changes already that I believe I do have an advantage. I also know at the other end of the extreme I am not going to look like this after... (http://www)irun.com/users/1505/pictures/maggie19.jpg (http://www)irun.com/users/1505/pictures/maggie2.jpg but I can work towards making some serious muscles, LIVE STRONG, and more importantly live the active healthy lifestyle that I have been striving for the last few years without having the barrier of injury after injury and joint pain, and other co-morbidity issues due to the excessive weight. Even with those small % that fail because of no fault of their own - mechanical, or whatever the case may be.. I am just going to stay positive that I won't be one of them. ahh.. thanks for letting me vent I feel better now =) (well.. besides this horrid 2 day bowel prep and just 2 hrs of sleep.. I was ready to bring my pillow and sleep in the bathroom last night!!)
