Mucsle Loss????Post RNY
Hi You all!!! Merry Christmas.....I have been weight lifting 3 days per week with a trainer for 12 months now and have great muscle definition under all the fat. I am worried with the rapid weight loss after surgery that I will loose mucsle mass!! Does anyone know if taking the glutamine powder will help prevent some of the muscle loss?? If not what do you suggest?? Thanks for your input....Lori
You may be able to reduce, or slow; oh hell most likely not, you will lose a bunch of muscle in the first 4-6 months. You just can not eat enough to stop it. The good news is the ratio of muscle to fat seemed to be pretty good in my case, but I lost a lot of muscle.We are in essence on a starvation diet for a while, I think I got maybe 500 calories per day in the first month. Good luck to you, and it can only be good what you have done for yourself so far.
I have heard good things about Glutamine, and as far as protein drinks, I really like:
Designer Whey, and Isopure; shakes are a way to get the extra protein just be careful, it is easy to over do it once you are farther out and can eat more. You can also do "Power pudding" the Curry's got me hooked on it, just sugar free pudding with protein, good flavor and easy. Now you can find it everywhere.

I think that glutamine helps more with muscle recovery. I am not a big supplement fan. I think that supplements MAY help a little, but they are so overpriced. I guess I am too cheap The key to maintaining muscle mass after surgery is to MAXIMIZE your protein intake. Early on try to get as much as you can. It will need to be in liquid form. Also try to get more protein than your nutritionist recommends. They have some minimum standard protein requirement based on weight, but since you will be lifting, you will need more protein than other WLS people. I think even with the most diligent effort, you will still lose some muscle mass. But don't fret about it, you should be able to put it back on quickly. Just don't hit it too hard after surgery. Let the body recover first. Since you have been training prior to surgery, your muscles may even need an extended break. Good Luck
Thanks John for your suggestions....Do you have a favorite protein drink that tastes good or should I just add a good protein powder to everything? I have some 100% whey protein powder on hand that my boys used when they played high school football. I found a drink called carb control that has 21 grams of protein and 0 sugar, I don't know about the sugar alchol tho and I hear that may be a problem....I'm just scared right know cuz I want to be healthy and I have worked to hard this year trying to get strong. My trainer was hoping I could come back at 2 weeks post op for even some lite training.....but he doesn't know anything about this surgery...Do you think that's too soon? I don't have a favorite, but I am a non taster ...which means they all taste pretty similar to me. I just get the sale stuff or off brand protein. Sugar is not an issue with me. You can have a long discussion on the Whey vs. Soy and on... and on...but I just buy all kinds of protein and mix them up. As far as starting 2 weeks out...That in way too early. I am thinking at least a month...maybe two months... I waited 3 months...but I had a hernia. But maybe light stuff is ok sooner...see what the rest of the gang says. Good Luck
Hi Lori, I started out bench pressing 350 lbs once and now am only doing around 200 once. It's believed even with the most valiant efforts you will lose one pound of muscle for every three pounds of fat. Recovery has been slower than expected but I am now gaining more muscle mass faster than ever before and I have lifted all my life on and off. Once you recover from your healing crisis you may astound yourself with what dedication to a regimen will do for you. I lost down from 400 lbs at my heaviest to 367 pre-surgery and have been at 215-225 for the last six months. I would like to get to 200 and define some more but looking average is a welcomed change from looking like Refrigerator Perry. Next, body lift surgery
