Fever w/ dumping?

Starting around 4pm yesterday I began dumping. I'm two 1/2 weeks post op now. I have to say that last night was the sickest I have ever felt. All I had was some soup and some queso when we were out at a mexican place but I think that might have caused it. I'm guessing the fat content might have been too high. The dumping has continued through this morning but the cramping isn't as bad. Just very weak, dizzy, a little dehydrated, horrid headache. I am doing just fluids today. It seems I have a fever that continues to go up. Right now it is hovering at 100.8. If it hits over 102 and lasts a while I will go to the ER. Has anyone had a fever with dumping? Could this be something else?

It could be anything at this point, but I will tell you dehydration can cause a low grade fever. Anything up to 100 degrees is considered "therapeutic" When you go above that and sustain it, then you need to look at other causes. Have you taken any pain meds or tylenol to bring it down? At least put a call in to your doc to let them know what is going on with you so they can advise you further. I hope you feel better. That may be just too much too soon for your gut to handle. Queso and mexican foods are hard on normal digestive systems, not to mention newly raw rewired systems. I would lay off that stuff for a while and just stick to soft bland foods, that's what your body can handle right now, and overdoing it will cause it to rebel in a major way. I hope you are feeling better soon. Hugs, Val

I took some Children's liquid tylenol and it brought my temp back to normal. Also slept a ton today. I still feel really weak and my system is completely messed up. Someone suggested it could be food poisioning or a GI Flu as well. I'm not thirsty anymore so I think I've done a good job hydrating myself. I'll stay away from those spicy/heavy foods for a while. I was thinking because they were soft I would be ok. Actually I may not ever eat them again after what I've been through!! I have such a long day at work tomorrow. Tons of meetings. Hopefully by the morning I will feel better and get some energy back. Thanks!

That's good. Yep soft doesn't always mean ok! You don't have to feel thirsty to be dehydrated! Don't wait until you are thirsty, drink anyway. Don't over do it too soon either. You could just really be running yourself down, and then your immune system takes a hit, and you are still recovering from surgery...then bam! Trouble. So, take it easy, drink your fluids, eat some really soft bland stuff and rest as much as possible. It will get better, promise. Remember, this is not the easy way out, but it is the most worth it way out! Hugs, Val

No fever this morning and last dose of Tylenol was around 8pm last night so that's the good news. The bad news - I'm still having abdominal cramping, diarrhea, and really weak. I'm scared to eat anything but going to try some Lemon Flavored Nectar Brand Protein powder since that is the lightest thing I have right now. Do you know if we can take pepto or should I just let this GI flu or whatever I have take its course? I have to be at work for a meeting at 10am so I've got to get this to stop somehow. =( Trying to get in touch with my surgeon but have had no luck yet.

Surgeon had me in this afternoon for CBC and U/A. He said it is probably nothing but is being cautious. If it is something more then he will deal with it. I'm not worried though. Feeling a little better this afternoon. Just totally wiped and headed for some much needed zzzzzzzzz. Got my response on the pepto and that was a big no. I guess MoM and Tums is ok though.

I just got home and saw your post, I would have told you no on the pepto too, has aspirin related properties and can bind you up. Tums or mylanta will work good. Glad everything is ok. I think my 14 year old has your bug too. Must be going around...stomach achey, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizzy... I hope you get to feeling better. I don't know about out there but the weather is gorgeous here and it sucks to be sick. Take it easy!

Feeling 100% better today. Still no results yet on my blood test but I am sure it will be fine. I bet you anything it was a bug. Someone even suggested food poisioning. Whatever it is I am glad I am back to normal today. Still doing liquids though to be safe. Once I get the all clear I'm back in the gym tomorrow =) I am also officially suppose to start my soft foods phase now and my surgeon is pushing the real foods. It includes pretty much everything other then raw veggies and the other typical stuff that we can't have ie- grisly meat, etc. Going to introduce one new food at a time per day. Keeping my fingers crossed. It's kind of scary knowing how sensitive my pouch is. How did you deal with moving to this phase? Did you take a couple bites of a new food and see what happened in 15 minutes or did you just dive in and eat a serving. I guess it depends on the food. My first try tomorrow will be one scrambled egg in the morning. Then maybe the next day I'll try to sprinkle a little bit of melted low fat cheese on it and add an egg white as well. That sound ok?

I am glad you are feeling better. My youngest has some kind of issue with her gut right now, and I am half bordering on worrying about her appendix. She's been through enough, I am just hoping its a flu of some sort. Just belly pain, low grade temp. No nausea or vomiting, minimal diarrhea if any. Just really bad headache. I may just take her in to get scanned to be safe. I took a bite or two, slowly, give it a chance to get into the pouch and see how it settles. Eating too fast will make you dump, and believe me if you are going to be sensitive to it, one or two bites is better than a whole serving. Watch the eggs. A lot of people tend to have problems with them. It was 4 months before I could digest and handle eggs...very crampy, gasey and diarrhea with them. Egg beaters worked much better for me than regular eggs. Good luck. I think it's better to progress a little on the cautious side myself. Even tho he feels it's ok to press ahead, those of us who have been through it will all agree that taking your time is much better and allows your pouch to fully heal. Good luck tomorrow! Val

15 minutes after I ate my protein pudding today around 1pm everything started to go downhill again. Really sharp pain on my right side that radiated to my back. I had to leave work. I called my surgeon and told his receptionist. He is suppose to review my lab work and get back to me. I just took pain meds a few minutes ago. I really hope its just gas or at least he makes a decision fast to at least scan me to r/o anything else. I'm having a hard time getting fluids in too. Making me really nauseous. Sucking on Popsicles seems to help a little instead of doing jus****er. =(
