Welcome Sheryl! This is a great forum, whether you're an experienced gym rat or just getting started! The important thing is that you start! And that's my daily mantra: get yourself to the gym, get that first 5 minutes of exercise in, and the rest will follow! I rededicate myself every day to fitness, and I find that 90% of the battle is getting there (and not talking myself out of it that day), and another 5% is doing that first 5 minutes of *vigorous* exercise. Once you've gotten past that, you will find it easier to do the rest of the workout! In that first five minutes, you get your heart rate up, your circulation going, your mood elevates (yes it happens that fast!), your energy level increases, and you're so pleased with yourself by now that you feel like doing more! So why is it if exercise has all of these immediate benefits, that we aren't naturally motivated to go to the gym all the time? Because while we get these benefits, muscles, like other parts of our bodies, like to adapt to things that take the least amount of work, so we have to push the muscles. Our brains may know intellectually that exercise makes us feel good, but our muscles have to do the actual work to achieve this, and they would rather just hang out and chill! What the muscles experience with our workouts is a life of tearing down and recovery, even if our bodies as a whole benefit from it! Just remember that when it comes to your fitness, there are no stupid questions here! Don't be afraid to ask them! And whining is allowed, as long as you're workin'! With kindest regards, Donna E. www.teklawgirl.biz
