How soon after surgery...

I've been working out with a trainer the last couple of months and I've made some good progress. I know I need to take some time off after the surgery to recuperate; however, I am wondering how long is average before starting back to weight training after surgery? Thanks, Mary

Hi Mary, Welcome! Everybody's situation is a little different. The fact that you have started with a personal trainer is AWESOME!! Earl forgot to mention one thing (he's my hubby btw) that he had been training 30 years before surgery, so he is obsessive about it. That's a good thing because he trains instead of going to the bar for stress relief!! So, he started way early back with the weights...much to my concern. So, I would highly advise beginning with walking. Walking, walking walking. Increase it gradually with your energy. I would wait 6 weeks before even attempting to start any type of weight training. And most importantly check with your MD on what they feel will be best for you. He/She knows your history better than we do. You know your body so listen to it. You want to be careful because you can create extra scar tissue internally and hernia's if you train too soon too fast. You have started a great habit!! Keep it going!! Don't get discouraged about any of it! Keep coming back we will help you as best we can! GOODLUCK!!! Thanks for the input. I went ahead and put my sessions on hold for two months. I can then see what the surgeon says after the surgery. I'll be looking forward to seeing how I progress when I can finally get some weight off. Mary
