Thank you! I realize now that my question was kinda dumb...I posted when I still feeling overwhelmed and a bit panicky about my upcoming surgery. Since then, I've been doing a lot of reading and I see so many folks here who have sleeves and have done amazingly well. Like you say, it's all how you approach it and work the tool.

My BMI was 55 when I had surgery and my weight loss is going well with VSG. Both surgeries are excellent, but you can eat around both of them as well. As long as you work on the mental side of the equation, you'll be successful with either.
VSG with Dr. Salameh - 3/13/2014

Hello there, Recently I checked my BMI after my friend's advice.Actually I don't know how to calculate bmi so I googled and found this bmi calculator. This helped me to calculate my bmi easily.I'm shocked to see myself in obese category.I'm not actually that fat but I don't know how I get under obese category. From that I controlled my diet and did severe excercises. After continuing this for 2 months I found myself in same BMI category. If anyone has any working and easy way to reduce BMI please share
I'm on my 3rd day of Optifast and have surgery scheduled on July 9. As of today, my BMI is 59.3 (if I calculate at my current height of 5'8"...when I'm a healthy weight, I'm actually 5'9" and if I use that as my height my BMI is 57.6. Anyways, it's high).
When I met the surgeon last week, he told me that sometimes for patients approaching BMI 60, they end up doing a sleeve instead of RNY because the abdominal fat can make it difficult to perform the RNY. That was new information for me. So far all my reading and research has been on RNY but now I'm reading up on VGS so I'll be prepared in case that's what I end up with. I see there are benefits and downsides to both procedures, although RNY is considered "gold standard" for WLS.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for RNY, but want to stay positive if I do get VGS instead. Surgeon won't know until he gets in there, of course. And of course, there are other factors involved too, like scar tissue or just the positioning of one's "insides".
Just wondering if any of folks here went in hoping for RNY and ended up with VGS? How is your weight loss going? Have you been able to maintain your weight loss? Did you eventually get a revision to RNY, or did you keep the sleeve?

Feeling better these days - my head is 100% in the game. I am now setting a goal weight with a goal date. I'm tired of repeating the same gain/lose cycle over and over...determined to hold myself more accountable!! I'm 18 months post op today and there is no reason I shouldn't already be at goal right now. Enough!
Goal weight - 145
Goal date - 9/11 - my 50th birthday!
Have a great week!!
