200 pounds was overwhelming to me, too!! It honestly took about 3-4 years for my brain to catch up with that reality. This is my new normal now. I am determined NOT to screw this up!! I now know I am worth this fight.
Keep up the good work!!

That is why I never talked numbers with anyone when I was losing. When people asked how much I lost I usually said "A lot" and changed the subject. Or when they would tell me not to lose anymore, I would tell them my doctor was keeping a close eye on me and change the subject.
The comments bothered me, but thankfully people stop saying them once you get to goal and stay there. And quite honestly it is a big factor in keeping me at goal. I do not want to give people room to make comments about regain. Heck no, not opening that door!!

I had a visit with my ex husband and his mom last night. We have been divorced for almost 4 years but have remained good friends and see each other every couple months so I have lost about 50 lbs since I saw them last. They were both very complimentary (which of course felt great to hear) but when they started asking about numbers/goals etc. I got my first taste of "No don't lose that much"... really?!? I was close to 400 lbs when I started, so is wanting to lose 200 lbs all that nuts? When I said that I was getting closer to my goal of 100 lbs lost this year and planned to do the same next year they both thought I was crazy and the stories started about "this guy I know lost X lbs and he looked terrible... do you remember X from the cottage he had that surgery and he lost too much weight, he looks unhealthy and 20 years older". I know they love me and it comes from a good place but I surprised to hear those kind of things this soon.
As I was sitting there discussing the numbers with them I had the realization that 100 lbs from now I will reach my goal of being half of my original starting weight. It was funny to think that depending on which way I looked at it that goal it either seemed completely doable or like a dare to dream long shot. On the one hand thinking about losing 100 lbs over the course of the next year seems like an attainable goal but if I just look at the number 193 lbs it seems like such a long shot. Same brain, two very different approaches. So yes, I totally get the weird math. Lol
I'd say we're both off to a great start
Have a Merry Christmas!!

When I started this journey, the realization that i should lose over 200 pounds was completely overwhelming, so I choose to ignore it and focus only on my short and medium goals , for the most part.
Today I was just looking at my progress on my fitness pal. I don't know if this makes sense, but I realized that no matter what final goal I set, there's way less than 200 to go now. Less than 100 to get me to onerderland, actually.
I still have a long, long way to go, but now it's starting to feel a little bit possible. Those of us with higher starting BMI have a bit of a different route to take, and I figure if anyone can relate to my weird math it's you guys haha.
now, back to putting my head down and just focus on getting to 278!

A BMI of 45 would qualify for any of the surgeries (over 40, or over 35 with co-morbs).

With your BMI being over 60, I highly recommend you look at the duodenal switch procedure (DS). One of the reasons I wanted it, was that it is the best at resolving metabolic issues like PCOS which often causes fertility issues and cause other co-morbs. It's also the most effective of the weight loss surgeries for weight loss, maintenance of that loss, and resolving co-morbs (especially type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and metabolic issues). There is a closed group on FB just for DSers that become pregnant after the DS). Most surgeons have us sign something to use TWO forms of birth control the first year, and some the first 2 years post op, as there is a surge in fertility, but your body is taxed, as well as dumping a lifetime supply of stored toxins out of you fat cells, so best to get past the initial rapid with loss before even thinking about getting pregnant.
The draw back is that you must be vigilant with supplements as you malabsorb (also with gastric bypass - Rny) and that is particularly important if you want to grow babies. By vigilant I mean you will want to verify adequate labs are drawn on a regular basis, not just the minimum that many physicians tend to default to, and then monitor them and not assume your physician is on top of it. Their ears often don't perk up till there is already a deficiency with something. If you can't or won't commit to that, then the DS or gastric bypass are not for you, and you may want to look at something like the sleeve (same stomach configuration at the DS, without the malabsorbtion). With a BMI of 60, the sleeve probably won't get off as much weight or maintain the loss. Keeping your own pyloric valve on the stomach with DS and sleeve is a big deal, as replacing it with a man made stoma as RNY has, leads to problems like dumping and a much higher rate reactive hypoglycemia.
With the DS or sleeve you can also take NSAIDs in the future if necessary (within reason of course, as they are not easy on ANYones stomach), which you cannot with gastric bypass. Ever. Do lots of research first. It's easier now, then after you've been cut and have regrets.
You're doing great! Like you said, just keep doing what you need to do!
The scale is a tricky thing....

I was very open about my decision to have surgery, Other than my husband, I only told people once I had a surgery Date and it was about a month away. I also let people know it was a decision that was already made. To be honest, I don't know how most people feel about the surgery, because I didn't really open it up for debate. This was an important decision, and I made it with input from my husband, family dr and the clinic I attended.
dont get me Wrong, I answered all their questions etc. But they were mostly on the medical or logistics of it. Things like, what even is wls Hahahah. I also look at why people say the things they do. If something might be construed as hurtful, Is it from love/concern or innocent ignorance, then I will spend lots of time explaining things to you. If it is to make yourself feel better, or if you just want to be right, or willfully ignorant. Ain't nobody got time for that.
