Started With a High BMI and needed two surgeries?
just curious to find out if anyone on the forum started with a high BMI of 80+, and had to have two surgeries? I had surgery 1/17/12 with a BMI of 86.9 and lost 134lbs, my surgeon and the NP at my surgeons office think I would benefit from having the bypass now. they feel I lost all I could with the sleeve since I been holding on to the mid 300's for the past three years. just would love to here anyone story similar to mine. TIA

thank you so much. I might see if my surgeon has a support group so I can get info from similar experiences hopefully.

I went from 750ish to 440 and at that point I started to look at bariatric options. My VSG BMI was 78. I lost about 140 with the sleeve.
I'm going to shoot for the DS next, depending on what an endoscopy says about GERD/chest pain I have. With our higher BMIs, the DS is almost always better long term.
I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

hope all works out for you, if that is the best option I might look into it with a different surgeon of one will touch another surgeons work.

Many DS surgeons will go from the VSG to DS, as we already have the first part of the surgery. It shortens the actual DS surgery by some time because of this. The sleeve can actually work for higher BMIs, but it requires a lot of vigilance. You need to be assiduous about what you eat and track it. Write down literally everything you eat. Even the DS or bypass will not work if you eat too much or eat the wrong food. Having said that, the DS is, hands down, the best high BMI surgery. People have succeed at our BMI levels with most of the procedures, though. It's a matter of how diligent you are and how your mind works, as well as the degree of physiological change the obesity originally caused.
I discovered this week by carrying around a journal that I have been subconsciously grazing at work. I know this because when I went to pick up food I had a journal in my hands and noticed it. I was so mad at myself! I have been carrying it with me everywhere and, while it is a pain in the ass, I am surprised by just how much I've been reaching for food unconsciously. It's really annoying. I am trying to curb this ASAP before I get whatever surgery I need next.

Unless you have an issue like GERD, I'm not sure why you'd do RNY instead of DS for a second surgery?
What are you eating every day? Are you weighing, measuring, and tracking what you eat?

my surgeon does not offer the DS, I have issues with heartburn before and after VSG.. I am using Omeprazole now and the past week has been great.I'm eating chicken, fish.. mainly chicken that is my staple. I track what I eat with myfitnesspal, but not weighing or measuring.

The thing is, if you're not measuring or weighing your food, you actually don't know how much you're eating, so tracking isn't useful. You've stopped losing weight because you've put your body into maintenance. This is going to happen regardless of what additional surgery you get. You need to figure out what you're eating and how you need to modify your diet.
