This week started out kinda ****ty.  Had to put one of my hamsters to sleep on Sunday.  Because no vets are open on weekends, I had to go to an emergency vet and pay an emergency fee.  $250 for the whole shebang with communal cremation.

****ty, but at least I know the poor thing didn't suffer in the end.  He had testicular cancer and had stopped eating, drinking, and running around.

I know people think I'm crazy, because it's "just a hamster", but I get very attached to my pets.  This was a good hamster.  Never bit, very fun little guy.  Before the cancer, he lived a full life, and I'm glad for that.

I'm very excited about this week's weight loss.  I'm in period week and normally I put on 5ish lbs of water weight per period.  BUT I'm down 1lb from last week, so I'm excited to weight myself next week when my period is over.

I understand. I grew up having hamsters. My daughter had the sweetest hamster that died last year. she cuddled it for hours after he died. It was the saddest day ever. We had a funeral and I made a cross as a headstone. She was too heartbroken to even ask for another one.

They're so loveable and innocent.

When my last hamster passed away, I went two days later to go get another.  I couldn't stand looking at her little cage all empty.  I had a little hole in my heart that I wanted to fill with a new hamster.  I had to force myself to just deal with that little hole in my heart this time.  Now that I know how expensive it is to properly medically care for a hamster if they are ill and how much it is to put them down humanely, I can't allow myself to get another.  I have three dogs and two cats that rely on me.

So sorry for your loss. It doesn't matter he was just a hamster, he was a part of your family & losing him is hard. But at least he was loved & lived a good life with his "furever" friend.

Sheesh $250 to put him down & cremation? Sometimes I think they charge that much to take advantage of people when they're feeling the most vulnerable.

It was a $88 emergency fee (since this was the emergency hospital), plus $90-something for the euthanasia procedure and chemicals, plus $20-whatever for the cremation (my regular vet does not charge for communal cremation) plus taxes.

I don't think I'll be getting hamsters anymore. I have three dogs and two cats.  I simply can't afford these costs.  Now if my other animals get sick, I'm down $250.  Cats and dogs are expensive enough.

Plus, I don't think my heart can take them dying on me every 3 years.  It's just too short a time.

I know how hard it is to put a pet down. I had a cat that had gotten cancer & I had to put him down. I still miss him. Since I bought him in to my vet, they charged $110 I think to put him down & cremation, so maybe it won't be so expensive if not an emergency.

I have 2 cats & a turtle.

I was never a hamster person, but certainly a pet person so I understand how hard it can be. Sorry for the loss of a special pet.

Last week I posted I gained 10lbs of water weight after my plastic surgery...even though I know 'this is water weight' messes with your head. So it came off and I lost a few bonus pounds from surgery. That I was expecting, it's surgery just all in one week- crazy So I got home from my PS in DC last wednesday and was up 10lbs- 188. This morning I was 173. Which puts me at a nice round number lost since meeting with my surgeon for the first time, 210lbs lost. Somehow numbers in 5lb increments make me happy. LOL.
