Pre Op Liquid Stomach Pain
Hi all. I'm new to the forum and my surgery date is April 15 for the sleeve. I was put on a 21 day pre op diet of 2 shakes and one high protein meal a day plus clear liquids. I started Friday and it has been rough. The first day I had major hunger and nothing seemed to fill me up until supper when I had whole food. Saturday was worse because my stomach was totally empty in the morning which brought on nausea and vomiting/dry heaves. That has happened to me in the past when I have had an empty stomach and took my dog for a walk. Today was the same wretching mid-morning and feeling nauseated all day.
I am am calling my team tomorrow to tell them. I don't know what my deal is but it has to solve itself soon. After April 6 until the 14th I can only have shakes and clear liquids. Any advice?

The pre-op diet is hard for all of us. I was on three weeks of nothing but liquids -- and I felt terrible for the first few days. We all survive and so will you. It becomes much easier after the 4th day.
Good luck.

Hi there! Welcome to the forum! Were you on any medications or were there any other issues going on before you started the diet that may be affected by your dietary changes?
We have all been through it, so you are not alone. Everyone may be a little different- I am addicted to food and had very real reactions to not having my drug of choice at my disposal. I was pretty miserable, but I knew that what I wanted was worth it. I didn't have a lot of comorbidities, but the change was the first shock to my body and it was FIGHTING back!
If you know that the changes arent due to medical conditions or side effects to medications, talking to the team will definitely shed some light on it. It made me really look at how frequently I was eating and why, and thats hard to do too.
I drank a little diet vernors - a diet ginger ale soda, and that seemed to help.
Have you had a scope done to check for ulcers? I used to have nausea and vomiting when my stomach was empty. It turned out I had an ulcer. I was put on a PPI (proton pump inhibitor) and the ulcer healed.
Another thing that may cause nausea is dehydration. How much water are you taking in per day?
yes make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids. Make them flavored, they don't have to be jus****er. When you are not eating a lot plain water can make you nauseous.
One of my favorites when on a clear diet is to go to Chinese take out and ask for a quart of broth. Flavor is so satisfying... liquid diet, chinese flavor.
Can you have SF Popsicles? that helps between the coldness and the urge to bite...
Also try different timings with your shakes to see what works
Good Luck

I have to do a 3 week protein liquid diet as well. I am dreading it after hearing so many bad things about it. I still have 2 months to go before I have to do it. Right now just in the dieting phase. 1000 calories a day with protein. Tomorrow is my start day. Should have started Wednesday when I left my initial consult but I didn't have the proper things I needed to start. So tomorrow it is on. It's going to be hard but I have to stay focused and motivated. I know you can do it though. You got this. Just think about the blessing that you are receiving after this liquid diet is over. That is what keeps me going. Knowing that I will have a chance to start living and enjoying life. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress. Be blessed. ;-)
