VSG for very high BMI weight.

I was wondering if any of you have had the VSG at a BMI of 60-70?  I know the full DS is said to be better for BMI over 50.  I wanted to see if there was anyone with a very high BMI who just had a VSG and kept off most of the weight.  My surgeon suggested to look at the VSG first before making decisions.  Thanks~

I had a VSG on Jan 12/15.  My BMI was 71 at my first consult (weight was 373).  When I weighed in this morning I was 292.4 which now puts my BMI at 55.3.  I can't speak to how it stays off but I can say that it definitely can come off with the sleeve.

Thanks!  I am expecting that I must always be vigilant in maintinance (I have an eating disorder), so I expect I will have to carefully watch what I eat no matter which surgery I get.

I appreciate your input.  And congrats on your weight loss!!

I believe my bmi was in the 50's when I first started. I was 366, now I'm 235, I'm almost a year out., & still in wl mode. It is possible for people with high bmi to lose the weight & keep it off, but it takes longer with the vsg since there's no malabsorption & you have to be extra diligent while in maintenance. I'm still making my way towards maintenance so I don't know for sure.

No one surgery is better than the other, what works for one may not work for another. T-Rebel

Thank you so much!

I am coming to terms with having to be diligent forever no matter what route I go.  I intend to stay in counseling long-term, as well.  For me surgery is just going to help with the process, but I still am drastically changing my way of life either way.

My husband is planning VSG next month with a BMI of 55 (it was at one point 63). His surgeon said it was a good choice for him, and it will hopefully be less risky on someone with SMO than a more complicated procedure. That's actually how the VSG started as a standalone procedure -- for patients with very high BMIs where the DS was too risky to do at once, surgeons did the sleeve part first with the intent of going in later to do the second half, but they discovered patients were often losing sufficient weight with just the sleeve. Good luck to you whichever route you go!

My BMI was 55 and I've very happy that I chose the VSG!  I've lost 137 pounds so far and I'm still plugging along.  :)

congrats on your weight loss!

I have 200 pounds to lose at least (250 ideally).  I am not sure I will manage it all, but I will definitely try.

I've got 200 pounds to lose, not sure how close to that I'll be able to get without plastic surgery, but I'll keep working at it.
