Surgery Date

Hi. I have a surgery date of May 4th. I am excited and scared as heck. I had a lap band in 2004. It turned out to be a disaster. I have a bmi of 57. 5'9" 384 lbs. My surgeon is Dr. Marc Bessler. I wanted a vsg but he says and insists I do a rny for multiple reasons. I am scared of complications and longer term complications. He also recommends that I keep the band in for extra restriction. The insurance company did not approve removal of the band as well. Any suggestions and/or encouragment will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

WOW....congratulations a date. It feels like such a milestone when that happens. I am still waiting for mine.  I am wondering what your doctors reasons where for you to have the  rny instead of the vsg ? I am in British Columbia and when I went for my consultation I was told the choice on which of the two surgeries I want is up to me. It seems that it really depends on the dr. or clinic. I always feel like knowledge is power and if you research the dr. the clinic and be realistic with yourself about the long term you will do fantastic. It really is up to us. I wish you all the best of luck and would love to hear back from you about how you are doing. Myself, I have good days and bad days as I am preparing myself and working on losing some weight before my surgery date. So I guess what I am saying I totally understand your concerns and nervousness.  Laura

Thanks for your encouraging words. My doctor feels that because of the band there will be too much scar tissue to do the vsg properly. Also, he feels i will have better weight loss with the rny. Please keep in touch.

Yes what your doctor is saying about scar tissue sounds valid to me. I have also read and heard that weight loss is more successful with the rny and that is the goal.... also I have read that the rny is reversible although I have also heard that is not done very often. But for me there has been some comfort in that knowledge. Thanks for writing back. It is nice to chat with people that understand the struggle.
