Need Encouragement

I have recently started my process to have weight loss surgery and by it snowing so much in the last 2-3 weeks I have not found a way to keep moving and to exercise during this time. I feel as though I have gained weight instead of losing it. I am so afraid to even go to my nutrition class because I don't even know what I am gonna say if I did gain weight during this time. I am so afraid if I didn't lose any they will say they cant help me even though this is my first class.

It's frustrating I know...I hate winter at the best of times! The biggest thing is to watch what you eat...log everything so you can see what you're eating. Try to get a little creative about inside exercise...do extra housework (vacuuming is great!) or if you're sitting you can do a little weight lifting with large cans of soup or something.

Not sure how it works where you go but prior to my surgery I gained a bit and when I was weighed by the nurse all she said was "that's not unusual and that's why you came to us for help." She made me feel so much better and my surgery went ahead as planned.

Keep doing as much as you can. Put post it note reminders around the house about how much better your life will be when you lose weight. This winters gotta be over soon! Good luck! Kim

Thank you so much. Now I don't feel as bad for gaining some weight and now I have some ways to move around the house

Some insurance plans require a certain amount of weight loss before they approve surgery. Some surgeons also require a certain amount of weight loss during the process. check with your insurance and your surgeon to see what their requirements are. My surgeon had it in writing that if I gained more than 10 pounds he would not do surgery. I did not lose any weight during my 6 month supervised diet, but i did not have to to get approved for surgery.

I would suggest getting some hand weights and doing some work with those while you're stuck inside. You actually can get your heart rate up with some vigorous upper body exercises with them or even by just walking in place or walking circles in your house.  Some people walk the malls early in the morning here if they don't belong to a health club or recreation center or YMCA/YWCA.

As Laura suggested, place a phone call to your surgeon's office and find out what your surgeon and insurance require.  Neither my surgeon nor my insurance required that I lose any particular amount of weight during my three month pre-op "multidisciplinary program". You need to know what the "rules" are for you, though. If you find out that you have to lsoe a certain amount of weight in order to get surgery, it may motivate you to find other ways to be active and to be more strict with your food choices.
