Hello Everyone!

Just wanted to introduce myself. I am just at the beginning of my WLS journey. I have spent the last 3-4 months or so researching procedures and surgeons, and waiting for my insurance coverage, which covers WLS, to kick in on 1/1/15. Well, at this point I am leaning towards RNY, and I have my initial appointment scheduled with my surgeon later this month! I am excited to begin this journey, but also very nervous about the possibility of complications. Reading on here is helping a lot to read about others' experiences, good and bad.

Looking forward to talking with you all as I continue on this journey.

I'm right there with you.  My doctor just recommended that I have WLS on Christmas Eve, and I've been frantically researching ever since.  I've met with the surgeon and am working on all my pre-op appointments.  I hope your journey to surgery is smooth and swift!

Welcome from someone who has visits this site daily.  You will find a wealth of information like you said--the good and the bad.  Happy reading!

Welcome!  I had an RNY on New Year's Eve last year.

Wishing you the best.

Make sure you do lots of research before deciding. There is one more surgery that has better results for weight loss, maintenance, and resolution of co-morbs, especially t2 diabetes and cholesterol. Studies show it's more effective for all BMIs, but especially best for those over a 50 bmi. Research the DS, along with VSG and RNY.

It takes more training for the surgeon to do the DS, and not all do it. It may take the surgeon more effort, but for me to not risk dumping syndrome or reactive hypoglycemia that can come with RNY, or the RNY's inability to ever take an NSAID for pain again, was totally worth the hassle of changing surgeons.

Believe me, I wish DS were an option for me, unfortunately, none of the surgeons who accept my insurance (I'm on an HMO and have a very limited pool I can choose from) perform the DS.
