Over to the looser's bench.

Just wanted to let you know that, despite my highBMI, age , cardio and pulmonary issues, plus my mobility problems, I made it to the looser's bench last Wed night. Alive, I might add, which was Definately a surprise to more than one of my friends and relatives. It is true that many WLS practices do not accept patients with a BMI over 50, or who are over 65 years old, or who have limited mobility, but I found an excellent program and surgeon who accepts patients with this criteria and who works with their PCP as well as Pulmonologists or Cardiologists to get the patient into shape( pun) to have the surgery. I adhered very strictly to my pre op liquid diet which was for 3 weeks and only lost 3 lbs. my Pulmo was not 100% on board but he agreed to get me in the best possible condition by having me use oxygen and do aerobic water exercises for a few months. My cardio did a cardiac catheterization and found my heart strong enough but wanted me monitored until the minute I left the hospital, which they did. Most importantly, I had a 45 minute consult with my anesthesiologist prior to the surgery. It took him 90 minutes in the OR prior to the surgery to wire me up, put in a pic line( just in case) and cut down spots for the IV anesthesia. He made sure I was not going to die on his watch, and although the process was painful, it was reassuring. I woke up from my 4 hr RNY, had no pain, no nausea, no leaks so far. My knee is killing me from having it immobilized during the surgery but I am going to get outside tomorrow and use my walker to limp along. This is what my Dr wants, and believe me, this is what she will get. She took a chance on me and we won!
