Sleeve vs RNY with BMI at 67
on 7/3/14 1:55 pm
With a BMI of 67, you need to look at the DS. It is the most successful surgery for those with BMIs orer 50, but also for all BMI. Also the best resolution of co-morbs, espicially type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, and cholesterol issues.
Not only that, but you can take NSAIDs for pain with the DS or sleeve (DS has the sleeve stomach) but never again with RNY. You also have the most forgiving and normal style of eating post op with DS. Research all the surgeries before you get cut - YOU have to live with it for the rest of your life.
In that case, get the RNY. A BMI as high as yours needs the metabolic edge. The DS has the best metabolic change, but the RNY gives a great punch for a couple of years, in addition to restriction. You'll likely not come close to your goal with restriction alone.

At my highest weight I had a BMI of 84.5. Today, my BMI is 32. I had the Sleeve surgery. My insurance will only cover VSG and RNY. They will not cover the DS (excluded). I have done extremely well with my Sleeve (but I am 100% on plan -100% of the time).

Thank you for your reply. I had watched a video from the doctors office where they talked about having the sleeve if your bmi was over 60 and then having a revision after you lose 80 - 100 pounds. My insurance will not cover the revision and I was afraid I would fail. I am currently at 443 and would like to be below 200.
I think that's a question that only your surgeon will be able to answer. Congrats on getting started!

My max weight was 373 lbs and I had RNY done 16 months ago. I'm down 167 lbs to 206. Happy as a clam. A friend of mine had the sleeve done and she lost 70 lbs out of the 150 lbs that she needed to lose. She's been stalled for months. I'm not saying that RNY is better than sleeve. Not at all. There are people on both sides who have done well and some have not done as well as others. I can onlyl speak for myself and say that I don't regret having the RNY done at all. :)
I am a year out now, and have lost 146 lbs from my start weight of 382. My starting bmi was 65.6, currently 39.1. My loss has slowed down the further out I have gotten, but is still trending downward at about 5-10 lbs per month. As I have increased my activity, it seems to be moving more quickly again.
