Question about losing weight..

My nut told me that I will not be able to go below 250 lbs because of my size with the RNY surgery. She said our bodies pick a happy point and won't lose beyond that point. Is she right?

Don't get me wrong. I would be happy being 250 because then I will be healthy again and fitting into stuff.

But is she right? :(

Not necessarily. I do believe somewhat in set-points, but have seen many of us get below where the professionals say we will end up. I have lost and kept off 200 pounds, but I am much more diligent than my friends I have in real life who have had bariatric surgery.

Have you had surgery yet? Did you consider the DS?? I had RNY and it was the right choice for me, but people I know who started over 400 pounds do seem to have more success with the DS.

Good luck.

If you want the best chance to get to a normal BMI and best resolution of co-morb like type2 diabetes, you NEED to look at the DS. There is a lot of good information about the DS (and the other surgeries) at DSfacts.com.

I needed the best chance to lose the weight, and KEEP it off, and resolve all my co-morbs. I had the DS over 6 years ago, and have done all of that, and am maintaining nicely.

So, DS would be more beneficial? I don't really have any co-morbities, except sleep apnea. I have been very blessed as far as that is concerned. Thank you all for your help!

I think what she is saying that with the DS you have malabsorption for life. You do need a pretty regular blood panel and have to keep up on your labs and your vitamins with the DS though if not you could have some serious side effects. I had the sleeve and have lost 170 total myself.

I do think you would be more successful with the DS than RNY or sleeve, as studies show it to be more successful both short and more importantly, long term.

But with any malabsorbtive surgery, like RNY or DS, you do have to be committed to having regular labs, and taking the right supplements. The sleeve may not get you as far as DS, but is far more forgiving if you slack or forget to take supplements.

Absolutely NOT!!!   I started my weight loss journey at 435 lbs today i am 185 and have been that weight for over 18 months and had a baby.  your body isnt going to get to 250 and just stop unless you dont make the changes you need to make in lifestyle that go with WLS. I wasnt 435 when i had my surgery i had worked on myself for 2 years b4 surgery and got to 296 but still I am way way below those numbers your NUT said and I know plenty of others who are as well.  I would not trust what she say s and in reality after going through all this the best advise i have for anyone is take anything the NUT says with a grain of salt because they are telling you what is common knowledge as good nutrition but I have not run into a single one who will tell you the truth about food.  and for me that truth has been eating clean will change everything!   Even when i go back to my surgeon i see their NUT each time and she has no clue when it comes to actual nutrition hell she suggest instead of eating carbs i should eat a protein bar UM no i will not eat things with chemicals in them that cause food addiction and weight gain!  I am sorry if this comes off mad but i get really mad at nutritionists because they tell you the basic idea of how to eat but usually they dont explain things about nutrition  I had to start researching food after my WLS because i was getting stuck at times and once i learned about the chemicals in our foods (the additives and preservatives) that have no place in food it made the whole food mystery a lot easier to unlock.  I hope you find your path to get healthy but i suggest learning as much about food and REAL nutrition as you can.  Things that got me thinking and into wanting to research food  were sites like this

My heaviest was 450 lbs which a truck scale told me so in 2007 I decided I had to change. I lost about 125 lbs over the next year but in 2009 I got pregnant with my first child and took the best care of myself I knew how which lead to me losing weight and getting down to 280.  But that was short lived and with in about 4 months I was back to 325 and pregnant again. I lost again but again was quickly gaining when I asked for help from my doctor.  I met my bariatric surgeon for a consult on June 26 2011 and on September 13 2011 I had gastric sleeve.  Since then I have lost 134 lbs and had another child.  Currently I eat "Clean" and do not take any type of medication or vitamin.  My body is healthy and strong, I get all the vitamins and calcium I need from my diet and my doctors are happy with my success and lifestyle changes and so am I.  My goal was always to be healthy so I wanted a healthy weight based on BMI.  My goal weight was 164lbs.  I surpassed that and got to 150lbs but was too skinny and now am comfortable around 160.

Not necessarily. I too believe we do have set points, but I don't think 250 is a set point for you. I think set points tend to become apparent when we insist we want to lose that last 5-10 pounds and cannot seem to no matter how low we cut our calories. Nuts, in my experience, really say things they shouldn't. I say that because she isn't your surgeon and doesn't have all the training your surgeon does.

There is a board member here, Sherrie aka Lucky2talk2, who has lost much more than 200 pounds with her RNY.

Others have urged you to explore the DS, and I agree.
