is a goal of 190 silly?

As my little ticker lady gets closer and closer to my goal number, I wonder what others think when they see it.  190.   My feeling is, coming from 383, I'd be thrilled to just be "around 200 pounds" for the rest of my life.  I dont have to be 120.  I was shooting for a reasonable goal that I, a food lover, could live with; and heck, 190 is a lot better than 383... but if you see 190 on someone's ticker for a goal weight, do you think  "lazy!"  or anything else negative?  Be honest, I want to know.

your goal weight should be what you and your doctors feel is right

my first goal is 200 lb , then I will try for 150 , and then see how I feel and look

I will probably get extra exercise  when I lose that much from my hubby chasing me all the time lol

My doctor's goal for me is 60% excess lost - which puts me in the 240s.  I think that I can do much better than that.  I am shooting for 200 and hoping to be able to see what 185 feels like.

Your height and bone structure matters too.  For me, if I get to 185, that is only 15 pounds over my met-life max normal weight.

i should spend less time looking at the VSG board where people have surgery around my current weight.  My surgeon said she wanted to see me at 191.   i dont know how she calculated that though.

My personal goal before she said that was 190.  I feel that if i get to 190, I'll probably shoot for 183 just to make it an even 200 pounds instead of 194 lost.

I don't think it's silly at all.  Based on what your surgeon says it seems like a reasonable goal.  My surgeon hasn't set a goal with me yet, but I believe according to the BMI charts I should be around 150.  That just seems so unattainable to me right now that I've set my own personal goal to 200.  I did HMR several years ago and I got down to 214 which was the least I'd weighed in my adult life. Right after I hit that weight, it became extremely difficult to not gain weight back.  I'm hoping the extra mojo from RNY will help me past that point, but honestly I started out pretty high (348), so 200lbs will be an awesome accomplishment.

I'm trying to not be anxious about this process and do my very best and take things as they come.  I don't think anyone *****alizes the hard work you've done will think of you as lazy!  :D

I think it's quite reasonable.  Don't worry about what your goal is gonna be right now, I'm sure it will change as you get closer.  I set mine for 190 at first also.  Then, I thought 187 would be good because that would give me a total of 175 pounds lost.  Now that I am getting closer, I just changed it again to 181 lbs.  It's slowly creeping down. LOL  But who knows, maybe at 187, I'll feel comfortable.

Like the other poster said, it really depends on your bone structure, height, etc.  I have a very large frame and am almost 5'9 so 169 lbs would put me at a normal BMI.  I feel like that would be too low for me since that was my weight in high school after I went on a medical weight loss program and it was very hard to maintain, even as a teenager.

Also, I get what you are saying about comparing yourself to others.  My goal pant size is a size 12 and some of the people on here started at that size or a 14! I am just now being able to fit into some 14s and that was their fatest!! But I know I could never be a size 4.  My frame is just too big. So I try not to compare to others.

Keep your goal at whatever you like and try not to worry about it just yet. You'll figure out where you want to be and what you can maintain. Congrats on your progress so far! :-)

I'm sure I'm biased, but I don't think it has a negative connotation whatsoever.  And you're certainly not lazy.

I'm 5'-7" and I set my goal at 180 lbs.  I weighed that weight in high school.  It might even be a little difficult to achieve now that I'm 51.  I've been heavy for so long it might even freak me out to be "normal."

It's only a number.  What's important is at what weight do you feel healthy and can maintain.

Hi Lisa,

I'm right with you.  I started at 385 and I never thought I'd break 200!  yet I'm at 202 today, and it will actually happen.  If I never lost another pound, I'd be just delighted that I'm so much healthier than when I started.  I chose 180 for my goal, but I think 190 is a very reasonable goal. My doctor's office said they like people to get to a BMI in the "overweight range" - rather than "obese". They said that there are more obesity-related complications over this weight.  That will be at 194 for me.

Goals are flexible, and I will revise mine when I see how I feel as I approach it.

best of luck,

Carol
