Considering Options with BMI 57.7
Hi I'm a newbie here on the forums.
My height is 5'6"
My weight is around 356 (it's highest yet)
and my BMI is about 57.7
Age: 27
I have: GERD, extreme lorodosis of the spine (partially due to spinal fusion at age 10), High Cholesterol, Pre Hypertension, Pre diabetes, and tachycardia (fast heartbeat). I also face being in a wheelchair fairly soon from the lorodosis, and past scoliosis of the spine. I've suffered a miscarriage a year ago, and have Poly Cystic Ovary Symptom since age 19 (or really anything over 200 lbs). I've had my gallbladder out, and several ankle surgeries/ some paralysis in my legs.
The worst part is that I used to be 150 lbs just less than 10 years ago. I've yo yo dieted since then but I've always been an emotional binge eater - since I was 2 years old I've been overweight.
I know it's time for a change. I'm going into the surgery with eyes open. I've met with one doctor (several times over the past few years) and am considering another.
I'm not going to lie, I'm petrified of another surgery (I've had many). I've just moved in the past year and one of my main concerns is I know no one here and I live with my fiance that works all the time at 2 jobs (I'm on ssi due to my back which is due to obesity).
One of my main questions is - can you have the surgery if you are alone most of the time? Is there any specific surgery that I should look into that others have had success with? Is there anything I can do that would increase my chances of a successful surgery (without complications) - thanks
I had a VSG a little over 2 weeks ago...I don't live alone but the recovery for me has been smooth...I feel if I had been alone, I would have been just fine. The important thing is to have everything that you need for after the procedure beforehand. That way if you don't feel up to going out, you don't have to. Good luck on your journey...whatever type of surgery you choose will benefit you greatly.
which surgery are you contemplating? I had the VSG (Vertical sleeve gastrectomy) and I can vouch for that one that yes, you can be alone while recovering. You are up and walking around same day. THe first 3 or 4 days after surgery I did little else but nap on my recliner all day, then after the anesthetic effects wore off at that point, I was up, picking up toys off the floor, doing dishes, painting door jams (taking full advantage of my time off work). :)
Hi I"m a 50 year old male like you I'm 5"6" and was 356lbs I had rny 10 days ago. On optifast for 4 weeks pre-op.Weighed 322 lbs day of surgery and yesterday I was 309 lbs.I didn't have as many health problems as you. First night of surgery i was going to washroom on my own,day after surgery I was walking the halls of the hospital went home next day and stopped at costco to do some shopping, was shoveling snow 2 days after that,I know everyone is different but it is AMAZING how good I feel having lost nearly 50 pounds in less than 6 weeks. You decide what surgery is best for you but I can tell you it is worth it.My wife took 2 days off work after my surgery but I was on my own after that.
The main things people seem to consider are the use of NSAIDS (if people need them they usually go with VSG or DS) and acid reflux (if that is an issue, many go with RNY).
My highest weight was 339. I had RNY and am happy with my choice. No matter what you choose, I do not think you will need full time care post-op. Maybe the first 2 days. I needed help with my kids (who were small at the time) but I took care of myself.
Good luck to you. Congrats on taking control of your life.
