Just scheduled my VSG
My BMI was 60 at my consult. My doctor doesn't do DS, but does sometimes employ a strategy of revising the sleeve to RNY a year later to achieve maximum weight loss. I was determined to do it all with the sleeve, and so far, so good! I'm 20 pounds away from surgeon's goal and hope to lose another 20 or so after that. Good luck no matter what you decide!
I haven't had surgery yet, but I my situation is very similar to yours. BMI around 70, 31 yrs old, no serious co-morbidities other than very very heavy. And I am going for the VSG as well (chose that over RNY because my main goal is to be healthy and active and I think I have a better shot at that with VSG since there are fewer complications).
Anyways - I just wanted to say that I appreciate you asking this question because it helped me as well.
At my consult, my BMI was 68.
My surgery was in July. Now my BMI is 54 and dropping.
Success can be had with the sleeve...you just have to work it!

Thanks! FYI, 37 of the nearly 81 pounds I lost was lost pre-op. :) But still....43 pounds in just a hair shy of 3 months is not bad!

Hi Welcome to the forum.
I had a BMI of 60 when I started. I'm down to a BMI of 40 now, and I am 5 months post-op today.
I started dieting the day of my pre-op evaluation in January, 2013, and lost 50 pounds pre-op. I've been losing about 15 pounds a month. So I would give you a resounding YES. VSG does work for high BMI people.
Best of luck with your weight loss journey. I think you'll be so happy that you made the decision.
