Help! I can't decide which surgery to have!!

I'm torn!  I was completely sold on the RNY, but now I am questioning whether I should do the RNY or sleeve gastrectomy.  I am looking at a surgery date in November.  I see my MD on Thursday and have to make my final decision by then!  My insurance covers both, so no financial concern/difference in the 2.

Any advice would be appreciated!  I need to lose 200 lbs!

the sleeve is a much easier surgery to live with, less malobsobsion  problems , no dumping or reactive hypoglycemia,

less chance of leaking, no hidden stomach that can have unknown ulcers or cancer

you can take nsaid pain releivers with the sleeve but not the rny

the newest studies are finding about the same weight loss with both surgeries , but the sleeve is a little slower

I have been losing 1 lb a day since my surgery 4 weeks ago , I can eat anything but only around 4 oz

I am never hungry I eat by the clock ,I was up and walking 2 hours after surgery , drinking the next morning and home the day after that on full liquids , I have been on full foods for 2 weeks now and love it

why do you have to decide now if your surgery is in November , I could have changed my surgery the week before at the pre op meeting if I wanted to

why would you want your whole body rerouted  when all you need is to eat less, the sleeve leaves in the pyoric valve which controls the emptying of your stomach( yes I said stomach not pouch )

the rny has no pyoric valve just a small hole attaching it ti the small intestine, food that is not chewed enough can get stuck  in this hole, and it does not control how long food stays in you pouch

the pouch in the rny is more likely to streach   than the sleeve is and the malabobtion of calories  only lasts 1-1/2 years in the rny but the malabosbtion of minerals and vitamins last a life time

if you didn't guess I got the sleeve(vsg)

I actually know sleevers who do dump.

Sleevers at my practice are still not allowed to take NSAIDs because it can hurt your sleeve. NOTICE I said sleeve and not stomach lol.

I am also never hungry and eat by the clock.

I have NEVER HAD FOOD GET STUCK IN THE "HOLE" you're referring to. By the way it's called the STOMA. I honesty can't even believe you're serious at this point.

And PLEASE show us studies PROVING that the pouch can stretch easier than the sleeve? Because I am calling bullsh*t!

To the OP: As you have probably guessed, I had RNY. I have lost 103.5 lbs and doing amazing! I have no problems eating healthy food, I can't eat sugar - but to me, that's a blessing! This decision is yours alone to make and we all think we our surgery is the best. But with 200 lbs to lose I believe RNY or DS is the way to go. Just my opinion, but it's yours decision. Good luck!

I've got a ways to go, but I'm six and a half months post-op and very happy with my sleeve. My main concern with RNY was long-term vitamin deficiencies. At this point with my sleeve, all I take is a multivitamin with extra iron and follate, and my blood work has been perfect. Good luck no matter what you decide!

I don't HAVE to make my final decision for them by Thursday, but I have to make it for ME.  I have to write a 12 page paper on what procedure I am having done as part of my "pre-op" preparation.  I'm a little on the OCD side, so I need time to prep/plan/prepare for what I'm doing.  LOL!

So, if you lose weight slower than RNY, does your skin not "sag" as much?  I know it's gonna sag, but just curious.

Did your doctors tell you what your expected weight loss would be?  I know it's similar #'s to RNY, but what about maintenance??

I'm also concerned about the malnutrition.  I don't want to be on supplements for FOREVER.  I like advil (LOL)!  I also am afraid of losing my hair!  I know that sounds vain, but dangit, I am finally at a point in life where I like my hair!!

Sorry so many questions...I just want to make sure I make the right decision.

My doctor just quoted the national average of 65-70 percent of your excess weight.

But, I can tell you that the hair loss is likely to happen with either surgery. Mine's still falling out like crazy. It's not my favorite thing, but even with thinner hair, I'm in a much better place than I was when I weighed 363.

You will also be on some kinds of vitamins forever with either surgery. And some sleevers have to take more than others. But, we tend not to have as severe deficiency issues as those who have RNY. But if you aren't ready to commit to vitamins for life. you're not ready for surgery.

Good luck!

Hair loss is due to telogen effluvium a byproduct of general anesthesia--not the variety of surgery.

CLARIFICATION:  With RNY they suggest taking a multivitamin along with other supplements 3x/day for forever.  I already take vitamins and supplements 1/day, so I'm ok with that, it is just the 3x per day that kinda bothers me.  If you have to get your vitamins and minerals from pills, why eat? (except for calories).

I'm really leaning towards the sleeve.

How long was your recovery time?

I would also research the DS. Most importantly, choose the surgery you can live with forever.

I take 2 mults a day and 3 calcium pills a day , I take iron once a day but I did that for years before surgery

you eat food because you need more than vitamins and minerals to run your body

you need protein , fats and carbs , fiber enzymes

the vsg sleeve absorbs vit and minerals better tha the pouch in the rny or the shorter intestines in ether rny or ds

also some meds don't work right with the rny or ds and you can never take nsaid pain killers with the rny, but can with the vsg or ds
