Hello!
Hi, everyone!
I'm Julia - new frm PA. I only recently started getting serious about my weight, but am now determined to get myself down to a healthy BMI. I'm currently sitting at 50.8, and that terrifies me. You really wouldn't know it to look at me - I'm often told I "carry the weight well" (luckily, or not, a large portion of the weight is in my chest). I saw an advertisement in the paper for a medically managed weight loss seminar the other day and thought I may as well go listen. That was Wednesday night. I went back the next night for the bariatric surgery seminar, and took my mom along. I never really considered the health risks associated with being an obese woman.
At 308 pounds, I've always been embarrassed about the way I look.. but never really thought it was anything other than a burden on my social life and personal view of myself. However, as they started rattling off statistics, I started to realize that I needed to take this seriously. And then they got to the statistic that has changed my view of weight loss - that I am part of the BMI bracket (45+) that only has a 60% chance of living to 60 (or something very similar to that - I was too shocked at the stat to remember to write it down).
I don't have insurance at the moment thanks to being unemployed, but when I get it again, I plan to immediately begin the process to get bariatric surgery. I'm not sure which procedure I'm most comfortable with, yet... I don't like the idea of completely removing or bypassing a part of my body, but if that's what it takes.....
So, hello. I'm going to be around a lot trying to keep myself from falling back into old habits. It's nice to meet you all (in advance)!

Hello and welcome ! You are doing the right thing here.....look at all the forums and links on this site....I spent hrs a night doing this until I decided to make my profile. I have surgery planned for July so things are now starting to move fast so take this time to do all your exploring and " lurking " on all the forums.....I started with a B M I of 60 I'm march and now it is down to about 58..... And I turned 50 years old this past December, that was a big turning point for me to take "real " action....good luck on your journey!
Hi Julia,
Welcome. Sounds like your journey has begun. Surgery is a part of it, but there is so much more; more movement, adding more protein, drinking more water. You can start now, so that by the time you have the surgery your journey will be in full swing.
Blessings and again, Welcome.
Hugs,
Sharon
I'm proud to say I've started taking a few steps. I bet myself at the beginning of May that I could lose 50 pounds by the end of the year. I cut out fast food altogether (a HUGE hurdle that I was struggling to overcome) and have dropped 7 pounds already. I also took a HUGE step and invested in a really nice pair of sneakers to work out in. Now I'm just trying to find an affordable local gym that I like. I'm really trying to get myself going towards health.
welcome , its a long process unless your self pay, but the time gives you time to make adjustments, how you eat, gets you exercising , there are lots of tests to make shore the surgery is safe for you, most insurance require a 6 month supervised diet
Im waiting to get my sleeve in a few weeks , me and my surgeon discussed the different surgeries, he told me the lap band was not for me(he has one), he said that the sleeve would be best and safest for me but he would do a rny if I insisted, I am going with his recommendation, he has the training, plus everything I read in books and online says the sleeve works as good as the rny and almost as good as the ds , with a lot less problem
make shore any surgeon you go to has lots of experience with the surgery you pick and has support for you after
