Question: Fat Free Milk or Almond Milk for protein shakes?

Ok, I am pre-op on the ins required diet & I have been having a protein shake for breakfast & lunch made with:
Whey isolate Protein powder with 0 grams of sugar
8oz fat free milk 15 grams sugar
5oz Yoplait Greek yogurt vanilla 7grams sugar
SF FF Jello pudding 1TBSP 0 grams sugar
Sometimes PB2 powder 2 TBSP 1 gram of sugar
My NUT was really happy with my breakfast & lunch choices (her suggestion was just low fat, low sugar, low carb). Then one day while I was entering my food on myfitnesspal.com, I notice that the fat free milk has 15 grams of sugar!!!! Holy Moly!!! So I decided to try the SoDelicious Almond Plus milk that has 4 grams protein (1/2 of the milk) and 6 grams sugar (~1/2 of the milk). The taste is tolerable but the trade off is less sugar with less protein. I am getting plenty of protein in but wondered which is better? The small trade off in protein for less sugar??

Any comments are much appreciated!!

I prefer the unsweetened almond milk, but that is becauseI just don't like regular milk. It really is a matter if preference.
You might find after surgery that you no longer like things you liked preop.

I miss milk, but stopped drinking it because of the the sugar. I drank a lot of it pre-op and still managed to lose a lot of weight, but now, it just pains me to see MFP add up the sugars :)

I use unsweetned almond milk (30 cal/cup vs 90 for FF milk) and very little fat/carbs/sugar. It's perfect for my protein shakes.

I am a milk girl.  I like the flavor and the sugars dont bother me.   I still struggle with protein, so I would rather have the higher protein and higher sugar.  I watch the sugar in other places.  You other option is to get rid of both and use water.  If I am watching the sugars and using Greek yogut in my smoothies I use water.  I was finding the using both was increasing the calories to much.  But I will also throw in an apple and mango (see I get to much sugar)

I gave up dairy a few weeks ago and it was very difficult.

For me FF milk is disgusting. Give me a glass of whole milk and I feel like I have died and gone to heaven. BUT, I dont drink or eat any dairy anymore . The homogenization and pasteurization change the milk and our bodies have a hard time digesting it. .

I have switched to almond milk.

I miss greek yogurt but since I have dumped dairy the weight has started to drop again.

Good Luck!

If you are worried about the sugar, stick to the almond milk. I do not worry about the sugar in milk. We all need to figure out what works best for ourselves and what works for one of us may not work for others.
