Pre-op Newbie with diet questions

Hi there, I have been reading throughout the website for a while and finally joined. I had my 1st visit with everyone (PA, surgeon, pysc, nutrition, insurance & finances) this past Tuesday. I am super exited to get going with my new lifestyle and have to start with a 6 month medically supervised diet per insurance before approval for surgery. I have been obese my entire life and have been on diet after diet, lost and gained weight and now at 42, I weight more than I ever have . My husband, children and family are super supportive and I am so grateful. My struggle right now is finding breakfast foods that I can eat that are not carbs but are super fast to prepare. We have 1 car and I drive everyone everywhere to everything including myself to work, etc. I am considering moving to the whey protein powder mixed with a liquid (fat free milk or coffee) for my breakfast as this will be simple and fast allowing me to get protein for fullness. Any suggestions or thought would be awesome. Thanks so much!!!

Lately I have been drinking protein shakes in the a.m as we only have one car so I have to take my husband to work before i can go to school.  Sometimes I also do hard boiled eggs as they are good on the go. String cheese is always good as well as a few slices of deli meat. Who says breakfast has to be cereal or oatmeal anyways? :-) Good luck!

Thank you so much for your input!  I am going to try the protein shakes and see how that goes.  I just can't seem to make myself eat deli meat first thing in the morning, I am pretty sure it is a mental thing and I am going to have to learn how to push through that for sure!!

I agree with Mickey, the Premiere shakes saved me when I began this journey. They are read-made, taste good, are compact and pack 30 grams of protein. They are a bit pricey, but they are so worth the price. They come in cases of 24 which come in around $35.00. One of the things I noticed is it satisfied my cravings for something sweet.  They taste like chocolate milk.

Eggs are also compact. You can microwave them or hard boil them. Greek yogurt and a SF jam also packs the protein.

So happy for you!

Hugs,

Sharon

Thank you Sharon!!  I am going shopping this weekend, so I will look for the Premiere shakes.  I also think I will hard boil some eggs and see how that goes.  I have tried the Greek yorgurt with honey but I know I need to not have the honey, too much sugar.  I need to find one that I like plain.

Just another suggestion--add sugar-free dry jello to yogurt or protein drink for a change up.  BTW don't over stock your shelves with bunches of stuff because after surgery your taste buds change.

Thank you do much. With adding the dry jello to a protein drink, do you just pick flavors that will mix together nicely? I have never actually looked at the back of jello mix, so I am thinking it is high in protein??
Thanks for the heads up on taste buds changing!!! That would be crummy to have all thing protein powder/drinks after surgery and not be able to stand the taste!

I'm jumping on the bandwagon and recommending protein shakes. I have an hour and a half commute, so I really have no option but to eat breakfast in the car. Protein shakes are very handy, and you'll need to get used to drinking them as an important part of your post-op diet, anyway. I don't like the ready-to-drink drinks, but when I know it's going to be a busy morning, I mix mine up the night before. I have this little guy, http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CPB-300-SmartPower-15-Piece-Portable/dp/B003YLEXBO, and it comes with four travel cups that you can use right on the blender.

I started at 363, so almost exactly where you are and have been obese my whole life. I lost 23 pounds pre-op (even with the occasional freak-out binge). And I'm five weeks out now, about 27 pounds down from surgery and feeling great! You can do this!
