I can eat!!! Like real food!!! I am so happy. I haven't had food in almost 3 weeks. (stinkin stricture) but I can keep it down again!!!! WOOT!!! WOOT!!! Now to figure out how to get all my protein in. Protein shakes still send me running for a trash can or bathroom Any ideas? P.S. Y'all are the best and frequently make me cry, not sad tears but tears of relief, happiness, understanding and just knowing that I really am not alone. Just so ya know. Thank you to the moon and starrs in the sky.

Is it the taste of the shakes? It was help to put the protein powders in other things like soup or warm foods. I am very creative with it! Plain protein powder is all I buy and I can add it to what I want. In some things it acts as sort of a cream or milk like look. I never really liked the shakes that much because of the grit. (Although I have found if I make a shake I use a little of the liquid warm and mix the powder in it to dissolve before adding it into the actual magic bullet). But my favorite soup to add it to is homemade split pea! Be creative! Generally you do not want to add to something boiling hot or it will curdle a bit... Not so good. But after it is dissolved you can add it to the hotter portion!

Otherwise if you are eating regular food.. Eat protein foods first!

Hi Starr,

What about the shakes disagree with you? Can you give us a little more detail?

At the beginning I could only do premier ready made chocolate shakes. I got them as Costco. They are small, compact, and have 30 g of protein. The taste is pretty good. No chalkiness.  I drank them ice cold. I also used to make myself big vats of beef and chicken soup. I'd strain everything out and keep the broth to drink all day while at work. This kept my tummy very calm. I ate the boiled meat as well at meal-time. That broth and cooked protein made my first weeks seamless as I learned to feed myself again.

Have you tried the RNY forum for suggestions? I've never been over there because I had a different surgery, but at the beginning of my journey I lived in the VSG forum and asked a ton of questions. If I didnt ask something, someone else had.

I know you will find your answers. I am so happy you found us here though. What a lovely group of people that are here. Thanks to the moon and stars for you as well.

Hugs,

Sharon

I'm not sure if it is the taste or texture of protein shakes. I never liked it but before I could mostly keep it down. I have found that warm stuff goes down much much easier, even when I want something cold. Grrr. I will try mixing a little protein powder with warm liquid before adding it to the hot. The curdling part really turns my stomach and i have had trouble keeping it from doing that There is definately a learning curve. Just out of curiosity, what brand if protein powder do y'all use?
Thank you for your advice.

Premier Chocolate ready made shakes from Costco, Sams or Walmart.

Right after surgery I couldn't tolerate sugar alcohols. It's better, not great, but better now.  I used Unjury protein chicken soup flavor.   The other protein source I relied on is a pudding, MHP power Pak pudding.  I bought the pudding at Vitamin Shoppe, but GNC also carries it.

For the first few months after my RNY my taste buds were all out of whack. Try different protein drinks or greek yogurt. Vitalady sells samples of proteins drinks on her website.

Not sure if you can tolerate it but! when I was trying to get my protein in I took my favorite chili recipe and added the unflavored protein powder and then pureed it then heated up the chili. Even if it curdled there was no way to tell the way you can when you add it to broth because chili already has a texture even if it's pureed. I was able to double my protein intake doing that and I never noticed any unusual flavor to the chili from the protein. I still add it to my chili if I need a quick protein dose and I don't puree it anymore. As long as you stir it in well or add to beef broth mix well then add to the chili and stir well and then heat it up then I don't notice any curdling or after taste.

That's a great idea. I'll try it tonight. I found a recipe for chili and just finished cooking it (about 12 grams pf protein for 1/2 cup serving). I'll add some protein powder and give it a whizz and see how that works out. Thanks.

I totally gag on shakes. But the only ones I have no problems with are the synthrax whey isolate nectar, cherry is the best! Strawberry kiwi is excellent, leamonade hummmmm, crystal sky a bit to sweet fore, it feels like drinking candies.

The unjury chickem broth is excellent if
You like hot and you can make yourself a good soup full of protein

Unjury also sells protein cheese (like the cheese in keaft dinner) but I haven't tried it yet.

They are the only ones working for me because they taste like fruit juice and they have the same consistency! They are watery, not thick and not lumpy
