Heart problems stop my surgery
RNY on 12/04/12
It depends on the extent and type of heart disease. You will have to do a stress test of process. The cadiologist will decide whether the benefit outweighs the risk. I have sleep apnea, borderline hbp, mild heart valve sclerosis and my heart doesnt relax as well as it should. I was cleared last month. So it will all just depend on your situation. Good luck from someone else in Georgia :)
I was cleared for surgery with a relatively serious heart condition...just had to take my meds the morning of surgery. The docs will definitely do extensive pre-op testing to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery - if you dont have a cpap, you may have to start that, and make sure your BP is controlled on meds.
Start exercising and getting healthy now - itll make your body stronger for surgery.

Hey BigPoppa,
Get ready for lots of tests and hopefully the answer you can have the surgery. Can you start mild exercise like walking? If you can, I would start walking, even if it's inside the house, to build up stamina and strength. Try to stay away from carbs.
Many here have had to jump thru lots of hoops to get to the goal of surgery, but it can be done.
You are in my thoughts.
Best,
Sharon

I believe your chances are very good. They just need to take extra care and you will need a cardiac clearance. I met a lady that had hypertension induced congestive heart failure that had RNY. She no longer has the congestive heart failure. It's something that can be looked at as a co-morbid condition for surgery. You just have more hoops...but it can be done : )
That's a good question for your surgeon and/or cardiologist.
I think the better question is how long would you survive without it?
