My insurance gives a waiver regarding the 6 months diet if a person is at or above 50 BMI.

My weight fluctuates just at and just below 50 BMI. Does anyone know if I'm weighed below at some point prior to surgery what happens? Isn't there a week of liquids before the surgery? I'd hate to be told to at the hospital to leave and start the 6 months...

Insurance approval is usually going to depend on an initial weigh in. It would be bizzare for them to penalize you for losing weight. Not to say it can NEVER happen, but would be unusual. The best way to get peace of mind is to call insurance directly (dont always rely in surgeon's office to get the correct info relayed to you!)

Yeah, call your insurance company.

If they say yes, I would NEVER suggest ankle weights or change in your pockets or anything like that. I'll be honest and tell you that I gained 5 pounds between my consult and start of the pre op diet. I was self pay, but was I was completely out of control with the food funerals.

Thanks for the advice. At the seminar last week someone asked this question and they said until recently they never had a problem. Now they are helping a patient fight the issue of dropping below the speicified BMI during the required pre-op diet. I can't imagine going through that. Ugh.
