question re bicycles

I'd really love to ride a bike- I think it would be a fun way to exercise, but I'm one of those poor unfortunate souls *****ally can't ride a bike (Think Pheobe from Friends lol) maybe it was because I was always a fat kid and I had a HUGE phobia of being too big for a bike, or toppling off of one, my aunt tried to teach me once when I was like 7 and I was so paranoid I never tried again lol. Maybe it's something to aspire for with my weight loss- finally learn to ride a bike LOL.
I sympathize - I haven't been on a bike since my age was in single digits (that would be nearly 35 years) and it never was my favourite way to get around. I don't recall being especially daring or brave on it, and I still had scars into my 20s from a bad fall. I think the only reason I'm even thinking about it is because of where I live. Its ridiculously bike friendly with wide lanes, bike lanes, bike trails and bike friendly cops. And no hills - not a one. Totally flat. Our weather isn't always congenial to cycling (it rains a lot), but I'm hoping to add enough variety to my exercise routine so that I can quit the gym and just go to the community centre in the winter.
I won't know if I can hack it until I start using the exercycle at the gym. Low impact on the knees, but still a lot of joint movement.

I have been an avid bike fan for years.
Number one, go ahead and get a helmet. I know you never wore one as a kid but your not a kid any more.
Number two, the wider the tire the more weight the bike will carry but also the slower it will go as it will be harder to peddle. If you can find some old balloon tire bike in a garage sale fine. Otherwise just shop around, you can from time to time find a bike that is under $200 maybe even below $100 at a Kmart, Walmart or Target that will do for exercise. It may not be fit for commuting though.
Avoid potholes, jumping curbs, or anything that will put extra strain on the bike and you can exceed the weight limit of the MFG. That is there more than anything to keep you from bringing a lawsuit if something fails.
