Personnally, I would put the "no malabsorption" in the pros for a VSG and the "malabsorption" in the cons for the RNY

But this is my opinion!

Me too. That is just an example of how different people made different choices. During his seminar, my surgeon made it clear that it could be considered both.  How you view it will probably affects your choice.

Totally agree, well said!

See Danni sees it they other way around, so it can be both!

I am very happy with my choice of the sleeve - I cant say I have any regrets what so ever with my choice. I never really considerd the RNY for more than a day or two when I first started researching, the band was never an option but I did think long and hard about going for a DS. Ultimately, I decided I could do this with out such a strong tool - I lost 85 lbs before I had surgery, and so far, the sleeve has helped me along quite nicely post-op :)

I can't give you advise, but I am a firm believer that we get what is best for us. For years i wanted the lap-band and could not get approved. Then VSG became available and I knew that surgery was better for me. Right around that time, my insurance changed and my VSG surgery was approved.

My surgeon really wanted me to have the RNY due to my initial BMI. I resisted and I am glad. I did not want to havea possibility of malabsorption issues. RNY is a great surgery and I am not knocking it. Many folks have had it and are very happy with it. My girlfriend's husband had it a few months ago and is very happy, healthy and losing like crazy.

Good Luck to you.

Best,

Sharon

I agree my only regret is not doing it sooner.  I had rny January 16th of this year.  It took me 5 years before I decided to have the surgery..  One of my Docs kept telling me to look into it.  I felt I could do it on my own.  I never did.

I choose rny for me it was a better fit.  I am a sugar addict.  I have lost 99lbs so far.  I am happy with my descions.  You will decide what is best for you.  I feel so much better.  I can walk without pain.  I fit in places now.  I can shop for clothes in a store may still be a plus size store.  Good Luck with your descion.

like the others, only that I didn't do it sooner. I am living again, and feel like I have found freedom.

I did the RNY because I am in Canada and it is the one most supported by our health system, and I thought it would give me better chances to get down to wonderland than the VSG. I would have had to self-pay and go out of country for the DS, and I did not like the idea of my care team being far away.

NOPE! There is a surgery for every person but I have spent over 10 years fighting to have WLS. I was so indecisive and was scared over the side effects, fought w/jobs where I didn't have coverage and then chickened out when I did. The result?

I ended up being a self pay and got a VSG. That is way I have NO REGRETS. I can't say I wish I had done this sooner because the sleeve wasn't really out at the times I wanted weight loss surgery (WLS). Although it was a 10 year journey, it led me to one of the best surgeons, top notch followup programs and the perfect surgery for me. I have no side effects, no complications and my healthy is stellar.

The most important thing is that I get to LIVE! You never realize all the effects of obesity until you lose weight and start doing things that other people take for granted. You don't even realize how effortless your new life is until you stop yourself and say, "Hey, I use to not be able to do that". I love not being so sweaty, out of breath, in pain all the time and constantly hungry and eating all the time.

For once, I am in control and I have even turned to a gym rat. I would not trade this life for anything in the world and I have NO REGRETS. My 10 year struggle was worth it because it had landed me to total happiness. Pray and let God lead you to the decision that is best for you. Best of luck to you!
