Rough past week

I just got back from traveling to see family. My grandmother died last week so I had to head out to the homestead and do the funeral thing. Sad and exhausting to be honest but I learned a few things and I'm soooooo glad to be home.  Now I know I strayed from my usual dietary plan because when you are traveling it's hard to get food and since I was flying standby I got stuck in the airport and had limited options but I did the best I could. Over all I didn't do too badly and the "cheating" I did do wasn't bad enough to warrant a flogging by any means.

But my cousin had sleeve surgery 3 months ago and so I thought I would see what changes he had made to his diet since his mom told me he had lost 60lbs.  After the funeral we went to a luncheon thrown by my grandmother's church and of course it's midwestern comfort food but I went in with a good mind set and I got a piece of fried chicken, a piece of cheese, and a small bit of spaghetti (just a taste really).  I ate my chicken after pulling off the skin and my cheese and then my 2 bites of spaghetti and I was ok. Mind you I'm pre surgery just trying to eat like post surgery. I can fit more in but I'm working on practicing now. My cousin who is 3 months post op really surprised me because

A. He piled his plate high with food as he used to.
B. He chose the pasta and fried food dishes instead of protien foods and had 2 slices of white bread.
C. He got dessert but because he couldn't eat it, he took it home with him to eat later.

Now I didn't say anything to him because that's his choice but I felt like he wasn't even trying.
I did say something to his wife about how I was surprised at the size of his plate and she commented that he doesn't eat all of it at that moment but will take it home and eat off it all afternoon and evening. She then said that they really had no idea what he should be eating because the doctor just gave them a manual that had a few recipes but no real guidelines for what and how he should eat.  I don't know if that's true or not but I did tell her I had some suggestions and sent her all of the websites and blogs I've run across over the past few months.

Now he didn't have the surgery for weight loss, his main reason was diabetes but I did point out to him that if he keeps eating the slider foods that the diabetes will come back.  Still at least it gave me a heads up and I was able to recognize what choices are better. I'm hoping when it's my turn to face food after surgery that I do much much better.

Anyway I'm back home, the funeral is past and I can return to my regularly scheduled program. I'm one month and 16 days from surgery.

Sorry to hear about your grandmother!!

But congrats on a job well done with the food - you will be so far ahead of the game when it comes time for surgery!! I have no doubt that you are going to be very successful at whatever goals you set for yourself.

It is very possible that the doctor did not give him a plan. I see that happening with other people on this site.

Less than 6 months out, a friend of mine ate spaghetti and it got stuck- truly painful for him. So don't follow your cousins example. He is really lucky if he is not experiencing any illnesses.

I waited well over 6 months to try whole wheat spaghetti.

We each have our own journey to take. You seem pretty focused. Keep that focus. You will be amazed by what your body can do.
