Bicyclists or any ideas...oh and another NSV!
I am just curious... As far as walking or biking... Is bicycling burn more calories? I am trying to cycle everyday and I am loving it!! I think I may even becoming obsessed with it. All I can think of is getting out in the outdoors and riding. I got an application that tracks distance, times, routes on a map, calories burned and so forth based on my weight, height, age, and being female.
It seems that I am doing better workout with my biking. Although because I like to swim and walk I am still doing this to. Just have way more choices now. I really could care less right now about my indoor bike though. Just so happy to be able to cycle outside!!!!
Any advice or information on the best ways to do this would be great!
NSV: I have been walking up little hills last week and for that matter any time that I road my bike in the years past... ( used to ride like 15 years ago... And just started to be able ride about a week n some days ago on my outside bike)... So yesterday my fiancé and I went on an adventure ride... Road a couple of trails and ended up going Renton to Tukwilla and then out to Seattle. It was a beautiful day, not to cold and not to hot! The NSV is that not once did I have to walk up the little hills.... A couple of them were a super challenge for me, but I was determined and the power of my talking to myself and my legs got my fat a$$ up those little hills. I felt that great feeling of
"I DID IT"!!!!!
Hugs,
Sherrie (although still not seeing my weight drop greatly... Think I have lost a few inches. I am now at 280 and hoping to see 270 some day!). I had hoped to lose another 50 before my wedding but I am not beating myself up. I still can be proud of my strides!

Sherrie! This is great! I was just posting to someone else that I haven't been on a bike since I was a teenager. I was assured that it is just like riding a bike; you just get back on.
I think it's awesome that you've found activities you enjoy. I hope to find that down the line. I've been emailing with a person trainer for after surgery. Even emailing with him is kind of scary! I just keep asking myself "will this get me closer to my health goals?" If the answer is yes...full steam ahead!

Sherrie, regarding your question about which is the better exercise for calorie burn, walking or biking;
You will burn more calories doing an exercise you enjoy, because you will put more time into it.
Sounds like you found a way to burn calories and have fun at the same time.
Congratulations on the small hills, that is great
There must be some sort of cycling bug starting on the west coast, probably started by Danni and Alison.

Gary's answer was 100% spot on about burning more with an acitivity you love!!!
I love cycling. I dont know what kind of advice to give you since i just get on mine and ride, but set your goals high, and think about some long distance events. Maybe find a riding group to join? I did that and found some of the most amazingly supportive people that were there to teach me, and motivate and inspire me. For the most part, cyclists are generally very friendly/accepting people (in my experience, but this doesnt include some of the rude jerks who like to terrorize people on bike trails).
I'm so happy for you!!

I was reading a paper about this the other day - walking burns more calories over the same distance as cycling or running, but not per hour. Cycling is better than walking in terms of calories per hour.
(ie walking a mile burns more calories than cycling a mile, but cycling 20 min burns more calories than walking 20 min).
I suspect cycling also allows you to exercise longer as its not weight bearing to the same degree.
