Weight loss and long term maintenance, regardless of our surgery type, is going to depend mostly on the choices we make. With RNY, you might get a 18mo-2yr period of malabsorption but after that...you end up with a restrictive only tool (at least the malabsorption of calories ends...not vitamins) and you still can't NSAIDS and still are at risk for bowel obstructions. I have seen many people succeed with the VSG - it is a good tool. (it's no walk in the park though -i developed GERD post op which suckkksssss but wouldn't change my decision).

My BMI was 54.3 and now is 31.8.
There are many on the VSG forum that started out in the 300s, 400s, etc. ...and not all of them men either. Keep looking. They are there. jimbovsg, frisco, oldmedic, superRN597, roundater, tripmom02, sleevegirl, sublimate, and many more. Just pay attention to the tickers.
I am 216 pounds. I am a little over 10 months out and lost over 150 pounds. I lost almost 120 at 6 months out.
It's taken me 2 years (the end of this month) since surgery and I still have some to go--but it can be done with focus and change in lifestyle. Not easy but so worth it no matter how long it takes.
VSG is becoming more popular and more ins. companies are covering it. There used to be a fairly common requirement that BMI had to be over 40 but I don't thing that's the case any more for many. The other day I saw someone starting at my goal weight---Yikes!
You really just have to pay attention to your own numbers and stats and not compare yourself to others---that can drive you crazy---
Good luck on your journey. This is a great place to ask questions.
