Consult with a surgeon on Monday

I have a consult with a surgeon Monday and my anxiety is getting the best of me.  I keep imagining the doctor saying I am too fat for surgery generally, or too fat for laprscopic surgery, or that my insurance won't cover it (my insurance does cover it, I even printed their policy to bring with my to the appointment).

Since I started thinking about WLS things have been happening quickly.  Within a month maybe less I reached procedures and compared the two area hospitals.  I started feeling out some close friends (all are supportive!  I knew I had good taste in friends).  I attended the information session at the hospital and now I am meeting with the surgeon.

I have flip flopped between lapband and gastric bypass and I see that many people here have vsg so now I am looking at that.  I know I just have to wait, be patient, and speak with the doctor but patience is a virtue and I don't have it.

Any suggestions about things you wished you asked and didn't?  I have a list of questions and have done my research but I don't want to forget anything.

Oh and I am Judy by the way!

 Welcome Judy.

I had the VSG, and i''m obviously a little biased towards it over the RNY bypass. There are several people on this forum with high starting BMIS that are rocking their sleeves so it is a good choice for us if we use it.

Also, if you haven't, check out the DS - they have a forum here. It's a very powerful tool, wasn't for me, but it's another option that provides malabsorbtion without some of the problems that RNY can cause.

Feel free to post here often - join us on our Monday check ins (even if you dont want to join the weigh in part). Everyone here is very supportive!

Sarah,
Was your open or laporoscopic?

DS on 01/23/13
I was 507 at surgery and had a laparoscopic VSG.
No problem.
Actually, my surgeon would like to do a DS after I've lost some more, but I'm not sure I want it if I'm doing well otherwise with the sleeve alone.
They did not want to do the DS in one procedure at my weight with my comorbidities.

But frankly, as it stands, I'm very happy with the sleeve. 7.5 months out and 125 lbs lost.

It really is the choice you will have to make. Think about your body, mind, soul, spirit, will power.... You are asking questions!! Results all very....! What ever you decide the tool will work only as well as you use it. There is malabsorption with the DS and the RNY. There are pro's and con's to all of them.

I started out at 654 lbs. I did the RNY and do not regret any part of it in the least bit!! It was the one for me. I think the size you are can make it more challenging but depends on the experience of the surgeon. Again do your research with regards to the surgeon. Best wishes for a great consult with the surgeon. My RNY was a full open.

Again each persons experience is individual and all weightloss will very at the speeds of loss and amounts. Depending on health issues you may have... Some surgeries are recommended over others.

Here on OH, go to the different forums and ask questions or read others stories. Ask more specifics on any issues you may currently have to see what results may have happened or so forth. Like POCS or Gerd or things like that...those are just examples because certain surgeries are better and so forth.

Hugs,
Sherrie
