Just found out I can tolerate sugar (small rant)

I'm not a sugar person, I never have been.  Of course I'd get a craving every now and then, but I usually just ignored it.

Well, my mom bought two boxes of popsicles.  One "normal" box, and one sugar free box.  I accidentally ate a "normal" popsicle.  As soon as I realized this, I started to panic and brace myself for the worst pain ever... but it never came.  It's been about 3 and a half hours and I feel perfectly fine.  I realize the sugar in a popsicle PALES in comparison to a candy bar or a slice of pie, but now I'm scared that I'll be tempted to eat sugar now that I know I can tolerate a small dose of it.

It's weird.  I didn't want sugar at all until I knew I could eat a little of it.   I hope my sweet craving passes.

I don't have a RNY but my friends that do - they could eat a popsicle with no problems, but anything with more sugar would cause them serious problems. I dont know what kind or how big it was, but I dont think one popsicle will truly tell you whether you can tolerate sugar.

Best to stay away - not worth the risk :)

Hello, I to had a similar experience and want to say I to had that happen. Accidentally eating some sugar. Freaked out for a minute. No sickness and was DISCUSSEDED! I know that the sugar of small amount in terriaky does not make me sick. Use less than a tablespoon on the rare occasion. But I know that with this knowledge that I will not freak out on the accidental sugars. I will still aim for sugar free as I do not want to be sick and will not intentionally risk being sick and going against my choice for RNY.

I WAS SHOCKED THOUGH AND I DID NOT FIND THIS OUT UNTIL CLOSER TO THE YEAR END POST RNY!

Hugs,
Sherrie

Thanks guys.  I'm still doing my sugar free snacks and I don't think I'll hop off that wagon.

I've marked every sugar free popsicle in the fridge with a noticable black dot so my mistake won't happen again   At least now I won't freak out if I have something that has a little sugar (like ketchup or the sauce they put on some salmon).

Most people don't dump on less than 10gm of sugar, then again only about 30% of RNY patients dump at all.

So you're right, just keep sugar in your "no thank you" pile as long as possible!

Good Luck,
