How open are you in real life about your wls?
I tell anyone and everyone, shout it from the rooftops if I could, but I am scared of heights so that one is a no-go lol. The best way to get the information out there, and help to dispel the myths and fallacies out there about WLS is word of mouth, walking the walk and talking the talk. I have several people that have pursued surgery after talking with me, watching my progress, etc. I am an open book, only now, there are a lot less chapters to me lol.
I haven't decided yet who I'm going to tell. It's a bit premature, since I haven't seen the surgeon yet (they may turn me down, who knows) but so far DH, my two (male) best friends, one girlfriend and one co-worker I'm good buddies with. My pshrink will find out next session.
I may tell my boss or a few other co-workers, I dunno. The one coworker I told reminded me that half our staff, who were relocated to another office, may be coming back in the next year or so, and wouldn't it be fun if I could have the surgery and lose a ton before they came back?!? He also suggested I grow out my very short hair and dye it, just to totally confuse them! *lol*
I'm kind of an open book at work - I don't hide my arthritis or the carpal tunnel surgery I'm having next week, I wouldn't hide a gall bladder removal...but I may keep this to myself. I'm one of the only overweight people in the office - they're mostly pretty slim - and while I don't sense any judgement from them (thankfully, we're all professional accountants and they know I'm good at what I do), there might be over WLS surgery.
Fortunately with my job, no one needs to cover for me and our sick leave/short term disability provisions are good, so when I do have it done I'll probably take off the time that I'm on liquids...
I'm most worried about telling my 3 "BBW" friends, especially the one that I've known since junior high. She used to be very slim (I never was), and now she's bigger than me. Her eating habits are terrible, she doesn't exercise and her husband is worse (and the stress he causes her makes her overeat MORE crappy food). And yet, although they both could benefit from WLS themselves, I think she's the most likely to be harsh about it. Of the other two, the one I've known the shortest length of time will probably be the least judgmental just because she's the sweetest and most realistic of them. Ugh.
