Welcome Nikkal!

You have found our little oasis here on OH! YEAH!

Sounds like you and your surgeon have picked the best surgery for you since you'll be taking NSAIDS...oh how I miss Motrin...sigh...

What's the turnaround time for you guys after going to the clinic? I hope it's not too long, but long enough for you to start making positive changes and doing your research on living life after surgery.

Please come back and ask all the questions you've got!

I haven't met with the surgeon yet - just got the referral from my GP.  The choice of a sleeve is mine, based on the research I've done, knowing my personality, and some "not official medical advice" from a bariatric specialist in Ottawa who travels in similar internet circles as I do.  I'm a pretty convincing debater who has my facts all lined up, so I don't think there will be much, if any, of an argument with the surgeon!  Both surgeons in the clinic do lapbands, RNY and sleeve, so it's not like I have to make a sleeve vs DS case (from what I understand its the other surgery that allows you to continue with NSAIDS).

I've been given estimates of anything from 6 months to a year from referral to surgery - it depends on a whole lot of inter-related factors (like getting tests performed by other specialists) as well as funding.  The ministry increased bariatric surgery funding for this fiscal year, but I don't know if the increased funding will continue into the next fiscal year (which starts April 1).  There is a BC forum here, lots of the people there have used the same clinic I've been referred to, and their times are all over the map.

I don't mind waiting a year if I have to - it gives me time to try weight loss on my own, under the supervision of their dietician, and with the support of their physical therapists.  Who knows, maybe I'll discover untapped resevoirs of willpower and be able to lose the weight on my own (hahahahaha).  I have to admit, unlike a lot of folks here, I've never really tried all that hard.

Ideally I'd like it sooner - my job is in a bit of a lull right now - I've got a couple of years before my travel schedule picks up again, and I'd like to be well entrenched in good eating and exercise habits as well as a lot smaller before I start that again!
