RNY on 02/13/12
ok im 9 days out and im scared of getting dehydrated because im not able to get in the full 64 ounces of water i might be lucky and get in half of that i feel so bloated is this normal is there anything i can do so i can get in all the fluid im supposed to be getting in?
You absolutely can become dehydrated if you don't get enough fluids, which is why everyone recommends that you sip all day long. You probably feel bloated because you aren't drinking enough.
Here's some tips:
Eat sugar free Popsicles (they count as water!)
Set a timer and drink a small cup every 15-20min
Open a bottle of water and throw away the top
Try a hot or iced drink and see if that helps.
Just keep working at it, fluids are very important. Hang in there, it will get easier!

Not getting 64 isn't enough information. What are you getting? I started out getting about 30 (too low) then got up to 40 (getting out of danger zone) and so forth. Crystal light, pineapple, etc. - whatever you are allowed to have that has a lot of water. Also, ice cold water is harder for people early on.
You do your best, but you have to set hourly goals and try to increase each day.
Dehydration is the most common reason I see people go back to the hospital. So you can prevent that.
Now, if you are getting 50 ounces, so be it. You won't get dehydrated, but always try to increase.

Nine days is so early out, that you need to be a little easier on yourself. Sip, sip, sip, through the day, and you will get enough water. I carry a bottle with me everywhere, so I know by the end of the day how much water I have already had.
When I was nine days out, I was complaining about eating five times a day -- now I am so used to it, I don't even think about it. Same goes with water.
If you are feeling bloated, drink less water more often. Sip, sip, sip ;)
